Physics - Kinematics - Exercises 3

The document contains a physics workbook on kinematics and motion graphs. It includes examples of position vs time and velocity vs time graphs, calculations of average speed and velocity from motion data tables, and problems involving determining displacement from graphs. Solutions to the problems are provided at the end, making use of the concept that displacement can be determined by finding the area under the velocity vs time graph.

a) Plot position vs. time and velocity vs. time graphs for this car.
Position (m) Velocity (m/s)

1 Time (s)

1 Time (s)

b) Determine the car’s average speed from t = 0 s to t = 9 s.

Total Distance = 12 m + 12 m = 24 m Total Time = 9 s (incl. 2 s stopped)

Averange Speed = total distance traveled ÷ total time (including stops)

Averange Speed = 24 ÷ 9 = 2.67 m/s

c) Determine the car’s average velocity from t = 0 s to t = 9 s.

Total Displacement = 0 m Total Time = 9 s (incl. 2 s stopped)

Averange Velocity = total displacement ÷ total time (including stops)

Averange Speed = 0 ÷ 9 = 0 m/s

b) Determine the displacement from t = 3.0 s to t = 5.0 s using BOTH graphs.

i) Using the position graph:

"⃗(3) = 4 m
d "⃗
d(5) = 10 m "⃗ = 10 − 4 = 6 m
Δd

ii) Using the velocity graph:

Find the area between the graph and the t-axis from t = 3.0 s to t = 5.0 s

The graph forms a rectangle with the following dimensions

Base = 2 s Height = 3 m/s Area = 2 (s) x 3 (m/s) = 6 m

c) Determine the displacement from t = 7.0 s to t = 9.0 s using BOTH graphs.

i) Using the position graph:

"⃗(7) = 10 m
d "⃗
d(9) = 0 m "⃗ = 0 − 10 = −10 m
Δd

ii) Using the velocity graph:

Find the area between the graph and the t-axis from t = 7.0 s to t = 9.0 s

The graph forms a rectangle with the following dimensions

Base = 2 s Height = -5 m/s Area = 2 (s) x -5 (m/s) = -10 m

4. Complete the table by sketching a graph that corresponds to the given situation
Note that other representations are acceptable but the relative
positions of the graph elements must be the same as given below.

5.

b) How far did the object travel during the interval t = 1 s to t = 2 s ?

From the graphs it can be seen that the object is in uniform motion during the interval
Therefore distance = magnitude of displacement; speed = magnitude of velocity

Distance = Speed x Time = 2 m/s x 1 s = 2 m

c) What is the object’s displacement during the interval t = 0 s to t = 10 s?

i) Using the position graph (assume the initial position at an arbitrary origin):

"⃗(0) = 0 m
d "⃗
d(10) = 5 m "⃗ = 5 − 0 = 5 m
Δd

ii) Using the velocity graph:

Find the area between the graph and the t-axis from t = 0 s to t = 10 s

(3 x 2) + (2 x -3) + (5 x 1) = 5 m
