Learning Episode 1
The Teacher We Remember

Analyze

1. From the PPSTs, the Southeast Asia Teachers Competency Standards and the
TEDx videos that you viewed, what competencies does a great teacher possess?

The competencies that the great teacher possesses are:

• Flexibility and Adaptability- One of the competencies that the great teacher possesses is
flexibility and adaptability. This competency allows the teacher to recognize that every
student is unique; teacher respect their diversity and allow everyone’s voice to be heard.
In difficult moments a great teacher knows to handle any kinds of situation.
• Content experts and Knowledgeable- Great teacher knows exactly and understand the
things he will teach and how to execute it. Like the saying goes, “You cannot teach what
you do not know.” A great teacher is knowledgeable about the things s/he will share.
• Dedicated and Committed- Great teacher loves and enjoy what s/he’s doing. S/he
acknowledges the duty and responsibility of a teacher. They make commitment to
education and professional development. S/he knows his/her responsibilities and
accountabilities as a teacher.
• Use Varied Teaching Strategies- a great teacher can incorporate a variety of strategies,
tools, to enhance the teaching and learning process. S/he thinks the best method to use in
a certain discussion.
• Can Communicate and Identify Students’ Needs- a great teachers knows to identify and
address difficulties of the students. They know how to discuss the issue and how to
communicate with parents and can establish good relationship with the community.

2. Are these competencies limited only to professional competencies?

Professional competencies possess these competencies. These competencies are not only
limited to professional competencies. There are some competencies that are generic which
are based on positive attitudes of a person and was established while s/he was growing up
whether the parents who’s guiding them taught it or s/he adopted it from the environment.

3. For a teacher to be great, is it enough to possess professional competencies to plan a

lesson, execute a lesson plan, manage a class, assess learning, compute and report
grades? Explain your answer.

Personally, I think that possessing professional competencies to do your job as teacher

doesn’t make you great and it doesn’t make you not great either. Since every one of us has
their own definition of being great. Professional competencies are not enough but it can be a
great help.
4. For a teacher to be great, which is more important- personal qualities or
professional competencies?

For a teacher to be great, personal qualities and professional competencies are both
important. What makes the teacher great is s/he possesses professional competencies with a
heart. Personal competencies alone can’t make you great as well as personal qualities alone
cannot make a person great. With the help of this two, the professional competencies make
the learning and teaching process easier, teacher can teach perfectly; while personal qualities
goes deeply in the mind and touches the heart while showing it through actions. As a student
I always look forward to the teacher who doesn’t only recognize and acknowledge my skills
and abilities but also to understand me and care for me and my boundaries, and that is what
personal qualities together with professional competencies make it more important.

5. Who are the teachers that we remember most?

The teachers that we remember most are those teachers that accept the students
understand them and care for them. Those teachers that is really good not only in teaching
but molding their students to become human. And most of all, those teachers that made you
feel that the school is really the second home.

myself in teaching and commit myself to the profession I am pursuing. Once there’s a

In which competencies do I need to develop more?

I need to develop my teaching methods. It is really a challenge for me to think what is the
best way to teach and what method is appropriate in that certain situation. I find it hard to think
and find an approach maybe because I am more in teaching than in technicality. I am also a

Write Action Research Prompts

1. OBSERVE In assisting my Resource Teacher, I observed that personal traits
such as strong communication and professional competencies like
flexibility and adaptability since we are in a new setting were least/not displayed and as
a result, students were/class was like they are just listening because it is require or
necessary not because they want it or they enjoyed it.

2. REFLECT The lack of these personal traits and professional competencies

(mentioned in #1) may be caused by the new setting or platform of
learning. Students as well as teachers are still adjusting with the new trend since we used
to have a face-to-face setting. The lack of those things can also be triggered by the
teacher’s attitude especially the personal traits.

3. PLAN I would like to address this problem (mentioned in # 2) by

conducting an action research on by conducting an action research
about online mode of learning and teaching.
4. ACT

a) The main objective of my action research is to develop the teachers and the required
personal traits and professional competencies to carry out the teaching and learning
better. And to determine the practices of engaging learning and teaching process

b) My specific research questions are:

1. What are the approach and methods to make the students involve in class discussion in
online setting.
2. What personal traits and professional competencies are required for a teacher to carry
out teaching and learning in online setting?

c) To answer my specific research questions, I will analyze the question until I

understand what I need to answer; I will begin to gather information through research.

Work on my Artifacts

When we are talking about education and teaching, professional competencies and
personal traits are always inclined. “Teaching is a very noble profession that shapes the
character, caliber, and future of an individual.” this quote tells what the role of a teacher to the
students’ lives. Everything the teacher does always have the mark that remains in the mind of the
students.
As a student, it is hard to stay focus and interested in a class. There are lots of things that
affect our focus. This episode gave me realization and throwback, I remember my teacher from
grades school up to college. Some of them are still in my mind and some of them are already
forgotten. I thought that being a student is the hardest part in education, but now I REALIZE that
being a teacher is more difficult. From organizing students, things, and time, there’s a lot of
responsibility waiting on the teacher.
Teacher’s responsibility is not only to teach, it is their duty to let the students be
themselves, be the self they wanted to be, explore the things outside their comfort zone while
guiding and telling their limitations and boundaries. Teacher should not only focused on the
academic success but also the well-being of the students. They should found a person where they
can rely on, or tell what they feel. Teacher should be an outlet of the students who have difficult
situation.
Lastly, I realized that, a teacher must not only teach, they must inspire, motivate, and
empower. Students are not only looking for a teacher that teaches excellently, they are looking
for a teacher who can touch and wake up their inner self to perform their best.
