Chapter 2
Critical Reading and Writing an Analysis
Activity
An analysis serves as an examination of the events in a literary work, in which the reader attempts to
discover underlying meaning and extract underlying ideas. An analysis expresses the ideas and values of
the author or the characters an author has created. Record this chapter’s focus and its underlying ideas.
Write an analysis of this chapter.
Chapter 4
Figurative Language
Activity
Authors use figurative language to enhance their work by making it more forceful.
Identify the following excerpts from this chapter of Brave New World as to their literary term. You may
choose from metonymy, metaphor, simile, or personification. In the space after each example, explain the
comparison or the feeling you get from the language. The first question has been answered for you.
Chapter 12
Characterization
Activity
The conflict of individuality versus conformity remains constant throughout the novel. Very little conflict is
seen between the conforming members of the World State, but conflict becomes evident between members
who are concerned with individuality and personal emotion.
Conduct a mock trail based on John’s refusal to attend the party Bernard Marx is throwing. Clarify and
state the charges brought against John by his host, Bernard. Use the other characters (Lenina, Helmholtz,
the Arch Songster, the Head Mistress of Eton, and Henry Foster) as character witnesses to defend or
incriminate John and Bernard.
