Assignment 1 Statistik

To estimate the median and mode: - Median is the middle value when the data is arranged in ascending or descending order. Since there are 40 investments total and the frequency of 50-60 days is 8, the median would be in the 50-60 days category. - Mode is the data value that occurs most frequently. Here, the maximum frequency is 10 for 60-70 days. Therefore, the mode is 60-70 days. Interpretation: - The median of 50-60 days indicates that half of the investments will mature in 50-60 days or less. - The mode of 60-70 days suggests that most investments (frequency of 10) will mature within that timeframe. (ii)

QUESTION 1 (24 marks)
Use Microsoft excel to solve the following question

(a) Super Bowl television broadcasts rate among the highest in all television broadcasts. The
Television Bureau of Advertising published a report titled TV Basics. Part of the report
listed the television ratings for 32 Super Bowls, as shown in the following table.

49.1 44.4 42.7 42.3 46.4 45.8 44.5 41.9

40.4 41.3 45.5 47.2 46.3 43.3 41.6 40.2
43.3 45.1 48.6 44.4 42.4 40.7 40.3 44.2
46.0 48.3 43.5 47.1 41.9 40.4 41.4 46.4

(i) Construct a frequency distribution. Use classes starting with 40 – 42, 42 – 44, 44 –
46 and so on.

(2 marks)
(ii) Find the relative frequency and percentage distribution for the data above.

(2 marks)

2
(iii) Calculate the mean and standard deviation.

(b) When investigating times required for drive- through service, the following results (in
seconds) were obtained. Find the range and standard deviation for each of the two samples,
and compare the variation of two sets of result.

Table Q1(b): Time Taken for Drive-through Service

Restaurant A 120 67 89 97 124 68 72 96
Restaurant B 115 126 49 56 98 76 78 95

Range = (maximum) – (minimum)
Restaurant A Restaurant B

Standard Deviation = √𝒔𝟐

Restaurant A Restaurant B

From the calculation above, variation of restaurant B is higher than restaurant

(c) Consider the following four data sets.

Data Set I Data Set II Data Set III Data Set IV

1 1 5 10
1 1 5 10
2 1 5 4
2 1 5 4
5 1 5 4
5 9 5 4
8 9 5 4
8 9 5 4
9 9 5 4
9 9 5 2

(i) Compute the mean of each data set

(2 marks)
(ii) Compute the range of each data set.

(2 marks)

5
(iii) Compute the sample standard deviation of each data set.

6

(2 marks)

(iv) Which measures of variation better distinguishes the spread in the four data sets:
the range or the standard deviation? Explain your answer.

Standard deviation because the greater the standard deviation of securities, the
greater the variance between each price and the mean, which shows a larger
price range.
(2 marks)

(v) Although the four data sets have the same means, in what respect are they quite
different?

The main different is number that inside each data and after that it then
impressed the variance and standard deviation.

QUESTION 2 (27 marks)

(a) The networks for the top 20 television shows, as determined by the Nielsen Ratings for the
week of April 18-24, 2005, are shown in the following table. Construct a frequency
distribution and a relative-frequency distribution for these network data.

CBS Fox ABC Fox CBS

CBS ABC Fox CBS ABC
CBS CBS NBC CBS NBC
NBC CBS CBS NBC NBC

Network of Television Frequency, f Relative Frequency

CBS 9 9/20 = 0.45

Fox 3 3/20 = 0.15

NBC 5 5/20 = 0.25

ABC 3 3/20 = 0.15

n = 20 ∑ relative f = 1.00

(b) The following data gives the number of driving citations received by 12 drivers.

4 8 0 3 11 7 4 14 8 13 7 11

(i) Find the mean, mode, and median for the above data.

∑𝑥 4+8+0+3+11+7+4+14+8+13+7+11
Mean, 𝑥̅ = =

Mode = 14

(ii) Calculate the quartiles, hence determine whether there is outlier(s) in the data set.
𝑛+1 12+1
First Quartile, Q1 = = = 3.25𝑡ℎ = 4
4 4
𝑛+1 12+1 7+8
Second Quartile, Q2 = = = 6.5𝑡ℎ = = 7.5
2 2 2
3(𝑛+1) 3(12+1)
Third Quartile, Q3 = = = 9.75𝑡ℎ = 11
4 4

IQR = Q3 – Q1 1.5 (IQR) = 1.5 (7)

= 11 – 4 = 10.5
=7

Lower inner fence = Q1 – 1.5 (IQR)

= 4 – 10.5 = -6.5
A data that is less than -6.5 is an outlier. There is no entry in the data set that lies
below -6.5.

Upper inner fence = Q3 + 1.5 (IQR)

= 11 + 10.5 = 21.5
A data that is greater than 21.5 is an outlier. There is no entry in the data set that
lies below 21.5.

Hence, there is no outlier in this data set.
