QUESTION 1 (24 marks)
Use Microsoft excel to solve the following question
(a) Super Bowl television broadcasts rate among the highest in all television broadcasts. The
Television Bureau of Advertising published a report titled TV Basics. Part of the report
listed the television ratings for 32 Super Bowls, as shown in the following table.
(i) Construct a frequency distribution. Use classes starting with 40 – 42, 42 – 44, 44 –
46 and so on.
(2 marks)
(ii) Find the relative frequency and percentage distribution for the data above.
(2 marks)
2
(iii) Calculate the mean and standard deviation.
(4 marks)
(b) When investigating times required for drive- through service, the following results (in
seconds) were obtained. Find the range and standard deviation for each of the two samples,
and compare the variation of two sets of result.
3
Range = (maximum) – (minimum)

(c) Consider the following four data sets.
(2 marks)
(ii) Compute the range of each data set.
(2 marks)
5
(iii) Compute the sample standard deviation of each data set.

(2 marks)
(iv) Which measures of variation better distinguishes the spread in the four data sets:
the range or the standard deviation? Explain your answer.
Standard deviation because the greater the standard deviation of securities, the
greater the variance between each price and the mean, which shows a larger
price range.
(2 marks)
(v) Although the four data sets have the same means, in what respect are they quite
different?
The main different is number that inside each data and after that it then
impressed the variance and standard deviation.

QUESTION 2 (27 marks)
(a) The networks for the top 20 television shows, as determined by the Nielsen Ratings for the
week of April 18-24, 2005, are shown in the following table. Construct a frequency
distribution and a relative-frequency distribution for these network data.
n = 20 ∑ relative f = 1.00
(3 marks)
(b) The following data gives the number of driving citations received by 12 drivers.
4 8 0 3 11 7 4 14 8 13 7 11
(i) Find the mean, mode, and median for the above data.

(c) Given below is the frequency distribution table for the days to maturity for 40 short-term
investments,
10
(i) Estimate the median and mode of the days-to maturity data. Hence, interpret the
values.
(10 marks)
(ii) Find the standard deviation of the above data. Hence, determine the skewness of
the distribution.

QUESTION 3 (14 marks)
(a) A certain shoe comes in 5 different styles with each style available in 4 distinct color. If
the store wishes to display pairs of these shoes showing all of its various styles and colors,
how many different pairs would the store have on displays? Draw the tree diagram to
concrete your understanding.
(3 marks)
(b) The following table shows the cross-classifies medical school faculty by gender and
position.
13
(i) Find the probability that the selected member is a male.
(2 marks)
(ii) What is the probability if the selected member is a female given that she is an
instructor?
(2 marks)
14
(iii) Calculate the probability if the selected member is a male or a professor.

(iv) Are the events “male” and “Assistant professor” independent? Are they mutually
exclusive? Why?
