Tutsheet-8

1. Assume that the alcohol content (in percentage) in a cough syrup taken from any particular brand is
normally distributed with the true standard deviation 0.75.
(a) Compute a 95% CI for the true average alcohol content of a certain brand if the average content
for 20 specimens from the brand was 4.85.
(b) Compute a 98% CI for the true average alcohol content of a another brand based on 16 specimens
with a sample average alcohol content of 4.56 .
(c) How large a sample size is necessary if the width of the 95% interval is to be 0.40?
(d) What sample size is necessary to estimate the true average alcohol content to within 0.2 with
99% confidence?

2. Suppose a sample of 400 cans, from a population with σ = 0.20, and a sample mean equal to 12.09. A
95% confidence interval would be?

3. A random sample of 120 students from a large university yields mean GPA 2.71 with sample standard
deviation 0.51. Construct a 90% confidence interval for the mean GPA of all students at the university.

4. Compute a 95% confidence interval for the true systolic blood pressure if sample of size 10 from a
normal population has sample mean & sample standard deviation as 121.2 and 11.1 respectively.

5. A financial officer for a company wants to estimate the percent of accounts receivable that are more
than 30 days overdue. He surveys 500 accounts and finds that 300 are more than 30 days overdue.
Compute a 90% confidence interval for the true percent of accounts receivable that are more than 30
days overdue, and interpret the confidence interval.

6. From past experience it is known that the weights of salmon grown at a commercial hatchery are
normal with a mean that varies from season to season but with a standard deviation that remains fixed
at 0.3 pounds. If we want to be 95 percent certain that our estimate of the present season’s mean
weight of a salmon is correct to within ±0.1 pounds, how large a sample is needed?

7. If a signal d is transmitted from place A and received as d + W at place F, where F is normal random
variable with mean 0 and variance 4 . To reduce the error if same signal is sent nine times and if the
successive values received are 5, 8.5, 12, 15, 7, 9, 7.5, 6.5, 10.5. Find a 95% confidence interval for
mean of d + W. What are 95% confidence lower and upper bounds.

8. Let X1,X2,...Xn denote a random sample from a normal population distribution with a known value of σ.

(a) For testing the hypotheses H0 : µ = µ0 versus Ha : µ > µ0 (where µ0 is a fixed number), show that the test
2.33𝜎
with test statistic 𝑋̅ and rejection region 𝑥̅ ≥ 𝜇0 + has significance level 0.01.
√𝑛
(b) Suppose the procedure of part(i) is used to test H0 : µ ≤ µ0 versus Ha : µ > µ0. If µ0 = 100,n = 25, and σ = 5,
what is the probability of committing a type I error when µ = 99 ? When µ = 98? In general, what can be
said about the probability of a type I error when the actual value of µ is less than µ0? Verify your
assertion.

9. The recommended daily dietary allowance for zinc among males older than age 50 years is 15 mg/day. The
article “Nutrient Intakes and Dietary Patterns of Older Americans: A National Study” (J. of Gerontology,
1992: M145–150) reports the following summary data on intake for a sample of males age 65–74 years: n =
115, 𝑥̅ = 11.3, and s = 6.43. Does this data indicate that average daily zinc intake in the population of all males
ages 65–74 falls below the recommended allowance?

10. A plan for an executive travelers’ club has been developed by an airline on the premise that 5% of its
current customers would qualify for membership. A random sample of 500 customers yielded 40 who would
qualify.

(a) Using this data, test at level .01 the null hypothesis that the company’s premise is correct against the
alternative that it is not correct.
(b) What is the probability that when the test of part (i) is used, the company’s premise will be judged correct
when in fact 10 % of all current customers qualify?

11. The article “Heavy Drinking and Polydrug Use Among College Students” (J. of Drug Issues, 2008: 445–
466) stated that 51 of the 462 college students in a sample had a lifetime abstinence from alcohol. Does this
provide strong evidence for concluding that more than 10% of the population sampled had completely abstained
from alcohol use? Test the appropriate hypotheses using the P-value method.

12. A tube light producer company claims that 80% of the tube lights manufactured by it have life time more
than 2 years. The consumer forum thinks the percentage is less.

(a) Identify the population parameter being tested, the null and alternative hypotheses?
(b) For a sample of size 150, determine the probability of Type II error at 5% level of significance if the
consumer forum thinks that 70% tube lights have life time more than 2 years?

13. To test the null hypothesis that population mean is 4 (H0 : µ = 4) against alternative hypothesis µ > 4 (say
µ = 5), a test is designed based on random sample of size 49. It is decided that the null hypothesis will be
rejected if the observed sample mean 𝑥̅ > 4.3. If the population variance is 9, find
(a) The distribution of 𝑋̅, assuming H0 is true?
(b) The distribution of 𝑋̅, assuming H1 is true?
(c) Probability of type-I and type-II errors?
(d) What is the power of the test?
