Home Tab
This tab is reasonably consistent across Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Clipboard
You can quickly display the Clipboard task pane by clicking on the dialog launcher in the bottom right corner of this group.

 Paste - Button with Pressing the arrow below the Paste button will display a list of the most common Paste Special
options including Paste as Hyperlink. (Standard toolbar).
 Cut - Cuts the current selection to the clipboard. (Ctrl + X). (Standard toolbar).
 Copy - Copies the current selection to the clipboard. (Ctrl + C). (Standard toolbar).
 Format Painter - Copies the format from a cell or range allowing it to be pasted elsewhere. (Standard toolbar).
Font
This group provides access to all the Character Formatting commands and contains a lot of the commands that were
previously on the Formatting toolbar.
The dialog launcher displays the "Font" dialog box. Note that the Text Effects tab was removed from this dialog in 2007.

 Font - Provides a list of all the available fonts (based on your current printer selection). (Formatting toolbar).
 Font Size - Lets you adjust the character size (based on your current printer selection). (Formatting toolbar).
 Grow Font - (This used to be called Increase Font in Word 2003). Increases the font size of the current selection to
the next larger size in the Font Size box.
 Shrink Font - (This used to be called Decrease Font in Word 2003). Decreases the font size of the current selection to
the next smaller size in the Font Size box.
 Clear Formatting - Clears all the formatting from the current selection (Ctrl + Spacebar).
 Bold - Toggles bold on the current selection. (Ctrl + B) (Formatting toolbar).
 Italic - Toggles italics on the current selection. (Ctrl + I) (Formatting toolbar).
 Underline - Button with The button toggles bold on the current selection. (Ctrl + U). The drop-down provides access
to the Double Underline command. (Formatting toolbar).
 Strikethrough - Draws a line through the middle of the selected text.
 Subscript - Converts the selection to small letters below the text baseline.
 Superscript - Converts the selection to small letters above the text baseline.
 Change Case - Changes the selected text to either uppercase, lowercase or another type of capitalization (sentence
case, capitalize each word)
 Text Highlight Color - Button with Shades the background behind the current selection.
 Font Color - Button with The button changes the color of the font of the current selection. The drop-down
….(Formatting toolbar).
Paragraph
This group provides access to all the Paragraph Formatting commands.
The dialog launcher displays the "Paragraph" dialog box.

 Bullets - Button with The button toggles single level bullets from the selected paragraphs. The drop-down lets you
quickly see and apply bullets from the following categories: recently used bullets, built-in bullets and bullets in this
document. The drop-down also lets you define new types of bullet and change the list level.
 Numbering - Button with The button toggles single level numbering from the selected paragraphs. The drop-down
lets you quickly see and apply numbering from the following categories: recently used numbering, built-in
numbering and numbering in this document. The drop-down also lets you define new types of numbering and
change the list level.
 Multilevel List - Button with (this is just a Drop-Down in 2007 ??) Please refer to specific page as this is quite
involved. A multilevel list shows the list of items at different levels, rather than just at one level. This was previously
accessible from the Outline Numbered tab on the Bullets & Numbering dialog box and has replaced Outline
numbering.
 Decrease Indent - Decreases the indent by 1 or removes the indent completely. (Formatting toolbar).
 Increase Indent - Increases the indent by 1. (Formatting toolbar).
 Sort - Displays the "Sort Text" or "Sort" dialog boxes allowing you to sort paragraphs of text or text within tables. If
your current selection is not in a table then the "Sort Text" dialog box is displayed. If the current selection is in a
Table then the "Sort" dialog box is displayed. This command was previously on the Table drop-down in 2003 but now
appears both on the Home Tab and Table Tools - Layout contextual tab..
 Show/Hide Paragraph Marks - Toggles the display of paragraph marks and other hidden formatting.
 Align Left - Aligns data to the left edge of the cell. (Formatting toolbar).
 Center - Aligns data to the middle of the cell. (Formatting toolbar).
 Align Right - Aligns data to the right edge of the cell. (Formatting toolbar).
 Justify - Aligns text to both left and right margins adding extra space between words where necessary.
 Line Spacing - The drop-down contains the following options: Line Spacing Options, Add Space Before Paragraph
and Add Space After Paragraph.
 Shading - Button with The button applies the selected shading to the current selection. The drop-down displays the
full colour palette and lets you select the shading colour. This was previously the Highlight button from the
Formatting toolbar.
 Border - Button with The button applies the selected border to the current selection. The drop-down displays the
full choice of borders and lets you select the border you want. This was previously the Shade as Border from the
Formatting toolbar.
Styles
The dialog launcher toggles the display of the styles task pane.

 Quick Styles - Displays a gallery of available styles (with auto preview). Is the Heading 1 style different in 2007 and
2010 to 2003 ??
 Change Styles - Lets you quickly change the style set, colour/theme and font of a style. Does contain a "Set as
Default" option
Editing

 Find - Button with He button displays the "Find and Replace" dialog box and displays the Find tab. The drop-down
contains the GoTo command as well as the Find command. The GoTo tab can also be displayed by clicking on the
Page indicator on the status bar.
 Replace - This displays the "Find and Replace" dialog box and displays the Replace tab.
 Select - The drop-down contains Select All, Select Objects and Select Text with similar Formatting. The Select
Objects was previously on the Drawing toolbar. The Select Text will select text with similar formatting.

Insert Tab
This tab contains most of the commands from the earlier Insert menu.

Pages

 Cover Page - Expands to display a list of built-in pages also have a “save selection to Cover Page Gallery” option
 Blank Page - Inserts a blank page by inserting two page breaks, one above the current insertion point and one below
it.
 Page Break - (Insert > Break) but defaults to a page break instead of displaying the Breaks dialog box. Alternatively
you can also enter a page break by pressing (Ctrl + Enter). You can access all the other types of breaks using the
Breaks drop-down on the Page Layout tab, Page Setup group.
Tables
When a table is selected you will see additional contextual tabs (link)

 Table - This lets you quickly drag out the table size, maximum (10 by 8) ?. The Insert Table displays the "Insert Table"
dialog box. The Draw Table ... The Convert Text to Table ... The Excel Spreadsheet command will ... The Quick Tables
submenu is a new feature added in 2007 that lets you ...
Illustrations

 Picture - Displays the "Insert Picture" dialog box. (same as Excel)


 Clip Art - Toggles the display of the Clip Art task pane to let you insert drawings, movies, sounds, photos etc. (same
as Excel)
 Shapes - Consolidated drop-down list of all the shapes including lines, rectangles, basic shapes, block arrows,
equation shapes, flow charts, stars and banners and callouts. (same as Excel) This is a consolidating from the earlier
Drawing toolbar.
 SmartArt - Displays the "SMartArt Graphic" dialog box which lets you choose from the following different types of
smartart: list, process, cycle, hierarchy, relationship, matrix and pyramid.
 Chart - Displays the "Insert Chart" dialog box. This was the previous (Insert > Picture > Chart ??). There is no more
MS Graph and datasheet. Chart data is now opened up in an Excel spreadsheet.

Links

 Hyperlink - Displays the "Insert Hyperlink" dialog box. This was the previous (Insert > Hyperlink).
 Bookmark - This displays the familiar Bookmark dialog box. This was the previous (Insert > Bookmark).
 Cross-reference - Displays the "Cross Reference" dialog box allowing you to ... This was the previous (Insert >
Reference > Cross Reference)
Header & Footer
 Header - This displays a gallery of the built-in headers. The drop-down also contains the commands Edit Header,
Remove Header and Save Selection to Header Gallery.
 Footer - This displays the gallery of built-in footers. The drop-down also contains the commands Edit Footer,
Remove Footer and Save Selection to Footer Gallery.
 Page Number - This contains the commands Top of Page, Bottom of Page, Page Margins, Current Position, Format
Page Numbers and Remove Page Numbers. The first four commands all display galleries of built-in page numbers
options and allow you save your own to the gallery. The Format Page Numbers command displays the familiar "Page
Number Format" dialog box.
Text

 Text Box - Lets you insert a textbox that can be positioned anywhere on the page. This displays the built-in gallery
and the commands Draw Text Box and Save Selection to Text Box Gallery.
 Quick Parts - This displays the commands Document Property, Field, Building Blocks Organizer, GetMore on Office
Online and Save Selection to Quick Part Gallery. The Building Blocks Organizer displays the "Building Blocks
Organizer" dialog box where you can manage all your building blocks (link to specific page).
 WordArt - The drop-down gives you a choice of Word Art styles to insert. (compare with Excel slightly different ??)
 Drop Cap - Lets you... This contains the commands None, Dropped, In Margin and Drop Cap Options. The Drop Cap
Options command displays the previous (Format > Drop Cap).
 Signature Line - Button with Lets you use and insert digital signatures into your documents. The button inserts a
digital signature line that specifies the individual who must sign. The drop-down displays the commands Microsoft
Office Signature Line and Add Signature Service. This is new and is the same as Excel (?? check)
 Date & Time - Lets you ... And displays the "Date and Time" dialog box. This is the previous (Insert > Date and Time).
 Object - Button with Lets you ... The button displays the "Object" dialog box which was the previous (Insert >
Object). The drop-down displays the commands Object and Text from File. Displays the "Object" dialog box allowing
you to insert embedded objects.
Symbols

 Equation - Button with Inserts an equation and then displays the Equation Tools - Design contextual tab.
 Symbol - Lets you insert symbols into your documents. The drop-down contains the commands a list of the most
common symbols as well as a Symbol command that will display the "Symbol" dialog box. Different to Excel it
displays the common symbols for quick insertion.

Page Layout Tab


Themes
This is one of the most significant additions to Word 2007.
This group is consistent across Excel and PowerPoint as well and provide you with all the necessary related commands.
A theme consists of 12 colors, a heading font, a body font and an effect.
Office 2010 comes with 21 built-in color palettes, 23 built-in font styles and 20 built-in effects. This gives you a choice of over
9,000 different options plus you can create your own as well. Themes can also be saved to external files meaning they can be
easily shared, modified and distributed.

 Themes - Displays a list of all the available themes. Tooltip indicates the current theme. Quick Access to more
themes saved down on Microsoft Office Online. Default theme is "Office". Changes the overall design of the entire
document in colors, fonts and effects. This drop-down has an additional command not found in Excel or PowerPoint
which is "Reset to Theme from Template".
 Colors - Displays a list of all the available colors and lets you change the color component of the active theme.
 Fonts - Displays a list of all the available fonts and lets you change the font component of the active theme.
 Effects - Displays a list of all the available effects and lets you change the effect component of the active theme.
Page Setup
The dialog launcher displays the "Page Setup" dialog box.
This groups has some similarities to Excel

 Margins - Let’s you choose from one of our built-in margin settings or lets you customize your own. Custom Margins
displays the Page Setup dialog box. Margins tab.
 Orientation - Let’s you switch between Portrait and Landscape orientation. This provides a shortcut to the (Page
Setup)(Page tab, Orientation).
 Size - Let’s you select from all the different available paper sizes. This provides a shortcut to the (Page Setup)(Page
tab, Paper size drop-down). Same as Excel
 Columns - This displays the options One, Two, Three, Left and Right and the command More Columns. Provides
access to 1,2,3 column layouts. The familiar (Format > Columns) dialog box can be displayed from the last command.
 Breaks - This contains the commands Insert Page Break, Remove Page Break and Reset All Page Breaks.
 Line Numbers - This displays the commands None, Continuous, Restart Each Page, Restart Each Section, Suppress for
Current Paragraph and Line Numbering Options. The Line Numbering Options displays the Layout tab of the Page
Setup dialog box.
 Hyphenation - This displays the commands None, Automatic, Manual and Hyphenation Options. The Hyphenation
Options displays the "Hyphenation" dialog box. This is the previous (Tools > Language > Hyphenation)
Page Background

 Watermark - Watermark gallery, draft, confidential Custom Watermark.


 Page Color - Lets you change the background colour of the page. Displays the full theme colour palette.
 Page Borders - Displays the "Border and Shading" dialog box. This was the previous (Format > Borders and Shading).
Paragraph
These are options taken from the (Format Paragraph)(Indents and Spacing tab) for quick access.
This group should really be included with the other paragraph commands on the Home tab ???

 Indent Left - TextBox. This automatically updates to indicate how much indentation has been applied to the
paragraph of the current selection. This can be used to change the indentation for the current selection.
 Indent Right - TextBox. This automatically updates to indicatehow much indentation has been applied to the
 Spacing Before - TextBox. This automatically updates to indicate how much spacing is defined before the paragraph
of the current selection. This can be used to change the spacing for the current selection.
 Spacing After - TextBox. The automatically updates to indicate how much spacing is defined after the paragraph of
the current selection. This can be used to change the spacing for the current selection.

Arrange

 Position - Displays a list of picture positioning options including In Line With Text and Text Wrapping. You can select
More Layout Options to display the "Advanced Layout" dialog box.
 Wrap Text - (This used to be called Text Wrapping in 2007). Drop-Down
 Bring Forward - (This used to be called Bring to Front in 2007). The button brings the selected object forward one
level. The drop-down provides a command to bring the selected object in front of all the other objects.
 Send Backward - (This used to be called Send to Back in 2007). The button brings the selected object back one level.
The drop-down provides a command to send the selected object to the back of all the other objects.
 Selection Pane - (Added in 2010). Displays the Selection Pane task pane.
 Align - This contains all the commands from the Align toolbar in Word 2003
 Group - This contains all the commands from the Group toolbar in Word 2003
 Rotate - This contains all the commands from the Rotate toolbar in Word 2003.

Document Components
A Word document can be divided into four categories:

 Document - A document contains one or more sections.


 Sections - A section contains one or more paragraphs.
 Paragraphs - A paragraph contains one or more characters and a paragraph mark.
 Characters - A character is a single letter or number. The paragraph mark is a character.

Each one of these components has specific formatting associated with it.

What is Character Formatting?


Character formatting is one of the type direct formatting that can be applied to your text.

What is Paragraph Formatting?


When you apply paragraph formatting, the formatting applies to all of the characters in the paragraph. Paragraph alignment,
indents, tabs, spacing, and hyphenation settings are all examples of paragraph formatting.
Paragraph Formatting Options / Attributes

Some formatting options can be applied to whole paragraphs regardless of the size of the paragraph.
 Bulleted Lists
 Numbered Lists
 Indents
 Alignment
 Line Spacing
 Tabs
 Borders
 Shading

There are two different types of spacing associated with paragraphs

 Paragraph Spacing - spacing between paragraphs, either before (0pt.) a paragraph or after (10 pt.) a paragraph.

 Line Spacing - is the distance between two lines in a Microsoft Word document.
