Do the Task!
An essay comparing the press during the revolutionary period, during Martial Law,
and the present time. What glaring differences do you see?
The battle for press freedom has always been a challenge for journalists in the
Philippines. Throughout history, journalists have sought to be the voice of the
people, expose the wrongdoings of government and serve as watchdog against
injustice. But journalists are also victims of relentless attacks in pursuit of preventing
them from informing the public of the truth. One of the major struggles of journalists
in the Philippines was during Martial Law.
.
On the evening of Sept. 23, 1972, President Ferdinand Marcos appeared on national
television to formally announce the declaration of Martial Law.
He shutdown, takeover of private media, only Marcos-controlled media were allowed
and even religious publications weren’t able to escape Marcos’ order, Blanket
censorship regulation and arrest of journalists, media owners. In the world of today,
press media has played significant role in strengthening the society. It helps us to
get information about a lot of things and also to form opinions and make judgments
regarding various issues and keeps the people updated and informed about what is
happening around them and in the world.
An essay of 350 to 500 words on the issue surrounding the Campus Journalism Act
of the Philippines and research on the issues surrounding it considering that it has
been 30 years since it was enacted.
The foremost value of news is as a utility to empower the informed. The purpose of
journalism is thus to provide citizens with the information they need to make the
best possible decisions about their lives, their communities, their societies, and their
governments. In a time of social distancing the importance of staying connected
through stories, media, and news is so pertinent. Our current global crisis has
unveiled the dependence we all have on media and news to connect us. I’ll be the
first to admit that virtual living and learning, for that matter can be very impersonal,
and presents a challenge to most. But the job of student journalists is to bridge this
gap between virtual life and ‘normal’ life for students across the university
community. Student journalism is a pillar of university life on campus, and with our
new-found virtual world, student journalists are those who will form the path
towards online community. Stories are the basis of life, the overarching connection
we all have to each other, and it is through journalism that these stories get
communicated. It is the declared policy of the State to uphold and protect the
freedom of the press even at the campus level and to promote the development and
growth of campus journalism as a means of strengthening ethical values,
encouraging critical and creative thinking, and developing moral character and
personal discipline of the Filipino youth. In furtherance of this policy, the State shall
undertake various programs and projects aimed at improving the journalistic skills of
student concerned and promoting responsible and free journalism.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer published an article with a fake cover of Time Magazine
with the late President Benigno Aquino III. The Philippine Daily Inquirer clearly
violated the Article 1 of the Filipino Journalists’ Code of Ethics for their illegal
conduct.

A 19-year-old shoplifting suspect died last Saturday. Police identified him as Timothy
Milan. He lived at 1112 Huron Avenue and was employed as a cook at a restaurant in
the city. A guard at Panzer's Department Store told police he saw Milan stuff 2
sweaters down his pants legs, then walk past a checkout line and out of the
department store. The guard then began to chase Milan, who ran, and 3 bystanders
joined in the pursuit. They caught up with Milan, and, when he resisted, one of the
bystanders applied a headlock to him. A police officer who arrived at the scene
reported that Milan collapsed as he put handcuffs on him. An autopsy conducted to
determine the cause of death revealed that Milan died due to a lack of oxygen to the
brain. Police today said they do not plan to charge anyone involved in the case with
a crime because it "was a case of excusable homicide." The police said the
bystanders did not mean to injure Milan or to kill him, but that he was fighting
violently punching and kicking at his captors and even trying to bite them and that
they were simply trying to restrain him and trying to help capture a suspected
criminal, "which is just being a good citizen."

students to read the controversial book, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." The
book was written by Mark Twain. Critics, including some parents, said last week that
the book should be banned from all schools in the city because it is racist. After
considering their complaints and discussing them with his staff, the superintendent
of schools, Gary Hubbard, announced today that teachers will be allowed to require
reading the book in high school English classes but not in any junior high school
classes. Furthermore, the superintendent said that it will be the responsibility of the
high school teachers who assign the book to assist students in understanding the
historical setting of the book, the characters being depicted and the social context,
including the prejudices which existed at the time depicted in the book. Although the
book can no longer be used in any junior high school classes, the school
superintendent said it will remain available in junior and senior high school libraries
for students who want to read it voluntarily. The book describes the adventures of
runaway Huck Finn and a fugitive slave named Jim as they float on a raft down the
Mississippi River.

Do the task! Create a map showing how to write a basic news lead.
LEAD
Is the beginning. It tells the
most important or
interesting information first
“When” lead begins with time. Almost “How” lead is similar to the “why” lead,
never the most important factor. Do this kind of lead explains how
not start with the time element. It’s something happened. “How”
almost never the most important sometimes requires more explanation
factor. than you can fit in a lead, but when you
can, use the how.
.
A summary lead is the most common and traditional lead in journalism. It is meant
to give a quick summary in as few words as possible and is usually one sentence. It
contains most of the 5Ws (who, what, when, where, why) and the H (how). Four-
Step Process are:
1) Collect your facts
2) Sum it Up, Boil it Down: Tell the story or compose a Tweet about it.
3) Prioritize the 5W's: Choose the most important fact and draft a lead.
4) Rethink, Revise, Rewrite.
BETTER LEAD:

six months of this fiscal year.
The Miami Dolphins lost in a 41-14 blowout against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, but
that was the least of cornerback Brent Grimes ‘worries. According to Adam Beasley
of the Miami Herald, Grimes’ wife, Miko, was “arrested on charges of battery on a
police officer” and“resisting arrest with violence.” She “also faces a charge of
disorderly conduct, per Miami-Dade PD, the arresting agency,” Beasley reported.
“Police say Miko Grimes broke through a police barricade and entered [a] restricted
area, head-butted an officer & shouted obscenities,”reported WPLG Local 10 News.
CNN provided video of the incident, which appears to show Miko Grimes being held
down by police officers in the parking lot of Sun Life Stadium. This is not the first
time Miko Grimes has made headlines. Per Jason Lisk of the Big Lead, Grimes went
on a Twitter rant aimed at the NFL in January. After she had emergency oral
surgery, her husband asked head coach Jason Garrett for permission to leave the Pro
Bowl. However, according to Lisk, someone else in the NFL apparently “pulled his
.
paid appearances when he missed practice.” This apparently sparked Miko Grimes’
commentary on a variety of topics regarding the NFL, including the league’s issues
with domestic violence, Thursday night games, concussion concerns and franchise
tags. Lisk pointed out the Twitter rant was “at 40 tweets and counting.” The arrest
comes as Brent Grimes and his team begin to prepare for a Week 4 showdown with
the New York Jets.

A 58-year-old woman was beaten after she was mistaken for an “aswang.”
The victim was seen by some residents on the roof of one of the houses at Barangay
Gargato last Thursday, said by Captain Ryan Villasario, town police chief.
He said that the house owner heard a cracking sound on the roof and upon
checking, they saw the woman. They allegedly tied her with a rope and hacked and
hit her with an arrow when they took the victim down from the roof.
Villasario, however, said that upon checking the medical condition of the victim, she
had no serious injuries from hacking.
Villariso said that he only learned about the incident through a Facebook post. The
woman was allegedly suffering from depression after the death of her husband.
“Daw may nervous breakdown siya, na gulpi lang daw siya gahalin sa ila balay,” he
added, mentioning the statement of the woman’s family.
The woman's family are still undecided if they would file charges against those who
hurt the victim. “Gina hulat pa namon decision ka family kay indi mayo ma istorya
ang biktima,” he added.

Out of the 10 types of feature stories, choose 3 and give examples from the
Internet. In the Review bar of MSWord, highlight which is the human face, the
theme, and the facts that enlarge on the theme.
Travel Story
Human Face: Colorful blue, red, yellow, green, and orange lights shift
gently and change shape like softly blowing curtains
Auroras are only visible at night, and usually only appear in lower
polar regions.
If you are planning to view the Northern Lights, take a decent
camera. The auroras are relatively dim to the naked eye and
human retinas can limit certain colours, so watching through a
long-exposure camera setting will provide a higher chance of a
better sighting.

The Human-Interest Feature
But the grand winner of Pinoy Big Brother: Lucky 7 (PBB) has proven that in order to
succeed luck needs to be coupled with the determination to never give up on your
dreams.
Human Face: Maymay Entrata failed the Pinoy Big Brother auditions twice, but she did
not give up and became part of Pinoy Big Brother: Lucky 7, where she emerged as the
grand winner
She first auditioned for Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Clash 2010 but failed to get in. She
tried again for Pinoy Big Brother: 737, but luck was not yet on her side when she
failed to get a slot in the audition phase.
She passed the audition for Pinoy Big Brother: Lucky 7, joined the show as
Miss Wacky-Go-Lucky of Cagayan De Oro, and eventually emerged as the grand
prize winner.
As fate would have it, the young lady who failed the PBB auditions twice, emerged
as the reality show's grand winner in 2017.

"Palaban na nga, we're coming back full force," the 37-year-old exclaimed at her
concert's media conference.
"Sobrang well rested yung boses ko ngayon, di siya pagod so I think you will see
may improvement kahit papaano," she even added in jest but with a hint of
confidence.
urtis admitted, however, that this attitude wasn't present the first time her
management, Viva Artists Agency, proposed the idea of a concert.
It can be remembered that the actress-host took a hiatus to focus on her family
when she got pregnant with her and husband Erwan Heussaff's first child. She gave
birth to Dahlia Amelie in Australia just before the pandemic erupted. As such, the
young family was forced to wait it out in Curtis' hometown.
In 2021, they flew back to Manila and when she was able to gather her bearing, her
management asked if she's ready to come back to the entertainment industry as
well. It wasn't a radical comeback yet — after all the country was still trying to
mitigate the spread of the virus — as Viva asked if Curtis could do an online concert.
"It made sense to do online concert back then because everyone's home and
another lockdown was imposed. But then eventually, things started opening up. So
they asked me, are you ready to do a live concert?" she recalled.
As a first time mom with an infant, it was understandable for Curtis not to
immediately agree.
"The truth is, lagi akong magasasabi na, 'Let's go' but sasabihin ko wag muna di pa
pala ako ready. It was a constant battle within me."
So what made her change her mind? She went to Resorts World Manila to get a feel
of the venue.
.
"I even sat on the stage, and then I felt it was the right amount of people I'd be
comfortable to perform in front of. Nami-miss ko na rin ang energy and ngiti ng mga
tao, so that's why I let the nervousness go and I said okay let's do this."
Raring to come back to work, Curtis has been doing dance and band rehearsals, and
taking voice lessons among other preparations.
"It was two years of normalcy for me and being a mom, the most singing I was
doing was nursery rhymes, so I just needed that kickstart," she admitted.
She also promised that her concert will be a visual spectacle, just like her previous
concerts "AnneBisyosa: No Other Concert" (2012), "AnneKapal: The Forbidden
Concert" (2014), and "AnneKulit: Promise, Last Na 'To" (2018).
"We have two of the top stylists in the country, Liz Uy and Pam Quiñones
collaborating so may mga palaban din na costumes. Every outfit change will be
iconic — it will be a fashion show as always."
With her dream team — director Paolo Valenciano, creative director Georcelle Dapat-
Sy, and the musical director Louie Ocampo — Curtis, who also works as the concert's
producer, promised "Luv-Anne: The Comeback" will be worth the wait. It will be
grand yet personal, still imaginative but a little more mature. Mas marami siyang
pasabog pero medyo mas nag mature yung style. Hindi syempre mawawala ang
biritan. At the same time, it will be intimate compared to other concerts because of
the venue and also given the current situation.
"It will feel like a reunion amongst my followers, friends and family I haven't seen in
a long time so it really has more of personal touch to it," she ended.
If gossip was human, she would have been named “Marites” in the Philippines. In
Filipino pop culture, Marites refers to every netizen who digs up and keeps track of
everything, preferably bizarre, usually on social media.
The online lingo "Marites" is probably the Filipino version of the American's “Karen”,
a slang term for a white woman perceived as entitled or demanding beyond the
scope of what is normal. But unlike Karen, Marites is used as a comedic relief and
that's all thanks to Filipinos' great sense of humor.
Marites is a Filipino netizens who enthusiastically dig up and keep track of every new
issue, rumor, and bizarre events they come across on social media. “Lahat ng tao
may tsismis, babae at lalaki. With the rise of Mariteses online and offline, the name
has now become synonymous for people who traffic in gossip known as a ‘tsismosa’
in Filipino social circles, they are often branded with the reputation of liars.
Collectively, most Filipinos are on social media and they consume a lot of online
content that often deal with the life of people they know. Many end up believing
more stories posted on social media than those fact-checked articles written by
journalist. Fake news has become a fact of life so that local ‘tsismosas’ make their
own spin on it for personal gain.
.
We cannot just close our ears to gossip, however, we should be an ethical and
responsible Marites. Together with the ‘original’ story, incorporate in the new story
our verified sources and correct misinformation from previous stories.
Maintain a gossip-free environment by setting the example. Rumors should stop with
you, and you should make it a point to speak well of others regardless of their
position in the organization. After all, you can’t control how they will treat you, but
you can always control how you react to them. And that leads to our last point.

The Angels finally celebrate a win in the Invitational Conference. —PVL PHOTO
All is lost for the Petro Gazz Angels in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL)
Invitational Conference.
But that doesn’t mean they’re going to lose all their games.
With nothing to fight for, Petro Gazz made sure it wouldn’t exit the tournament
without a win, stunning semifinalist and tournament leader Cignal, 19-25, 25-14, 25-
23, 25-14, at Filoil EcoOil Arena in San Juan City on Tuesday.
The HD Spikers looked like they could keep their unbeaten run going but an injury to
Ces Molina in the second set, where the star hitter landed badly on teammate Aiza
Maizo-Pontillas’ foot, turned the tide in favor of the Angels.
Cignal still leads the field with a 4-1 record and is through to the next phase where
the top four will move to the next round with foreign guest teams Kobe Shinwa of
Japan and KingWhale of Taiwan.
Army kept itself in the hunt for a spot to that next round with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-22
romp over Chery Tiggo in the earlier game.
Army is in a favorable position to advance to the next round of the tournament, with
only Choco Mucho still with a chance to upend the current top four.
But the odds are stacked against the Flying Titans (1-3), who not only need to
sweep their remaining assignments but also needs results of other matches to go
their way.

The Creamline Cool Smashers sweeps severely undermanned team Choco Mucho
Flying Titans with a 25-22, 25-14, 25-22 score in the 2022 Premier Volleyball League
(PVL) Invitational Conference on Saturday, July 23.
Alyssa Valdez only scored 9, but made up for it with 15 excellent digs and 12
excellent receptions, while Jema Galanza added 10 points.
Coming off a 14-25 blowout loss in the second set, Choco Mucho started its
comeback attempt with a 5-0 run to open the third, and maintained a 12-8
separation midway through.
However, the severe lack of personnel was just too much to overcome as the nine
available Flying Titans saw the Cool Smashers flip the script with a pivotal 10-3
barrage, capped by a Valdez off the block hit for an 18-15 lead.
“Actually, we didn’t adjust in training. We just pushed for our recovery and
conditioning,” said Creamline head coach Sherwin Meneses in Filipino.
Nevertheless, the severe lack of personnel was just too much to conquer as the nine
available Flying Titans saw the Cool Smashers flip the script with a vital 10-3
barrage, capped by a Valdez off the block hit for an 18-15 lead.
Although Choco Mucho managed to power through for a 20-all lead, Creamline
regained control with a crucial 3-0 spurt ending with a Carlos block to set up the
endgame in the pink side’s favor. However, the Flying Titans still dropped their third
straight game for a 1-3 record.

The May 9 Philippine election not only set a new record for voter turnout, it also
marked the first time that Republic Act 10366 – which mandates that polling stations
be fully accessible for people with disabilities (PWDs) – was implemented in full. In
his speech during the proclamation of senators-elect, the Philippine Commission on
Elections (COMELEC) chair cited that there were over 300,000 people with disabilities
and senior citizens who were able to vote at the ground floors of voting centers in
the elections. He also mentioned the efforts of the COMELEC in making the voting
process accessible and convenient for PWDs.
Activity 3
Directions: Write a news peg about election day, write a good headline reflecting the
content of the news.
Ahead of election day, COMELEC set up over 5,000 accessible polling places (APPs)
across the country. This is a significant milestone for the disability sector and
advocates – in 2013, there were only two assigned APPs for PWDs and senior citizen
voters in the entire country. In 2013, President Aquino signed Republic Act 10366,
authorizing COMELEC to establish APPs for persons with disability and senior citizens
in preparation for presidential elections.
In addition to the 5,000 PWD-accessible polling stations, COMELEC introduced in this
election new Emergency Accessible Polling Places (EAPPs) in over 250 polling
stations where voting took place in multi-level buildings. EAPPs are regular polling
places that feature an accessible room on the ground floor in case PWDs, senior
citizens, and heavily pregnant women who may have not registered at a designed
accessible polling place come there on Election Day instead.

The upcoming 2022 Elections in the Philippines is a heated topic both online and
offline, for first-time voters, know the importance of your vote. Why is Your Vote
Important? Suffrage or the right to vote must be exercised by all citizens of the
Philippines who are at least eighteen years old and have resided in the Philippines for
at least a year, as revised by Article V of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. The power
of all citizens to keep the government system running is represented by voting. It is
a right that every citizen should have.
Critique: The picture shows the ballot, it talks about our suffrage or the right to vote
must be exercised by all citizens of the Philippines.

Testing capacity to provide timely results prior to travel may be constrained in
certain locations in the Philippines. U.S. citizens may experience delays in scheduling
COVID-19 antigen and RT-PCR tests, as well as delays in delivery of results from
these tests, due to a recent significant increase in demand for COVID-19
testing. These delays, which have occurred in other countries during spikes in
COVID-19 infections, could continue for the next two to four weeks.
Critique: It is a great image that tells information about RT-PCR tests that is
somehow very relevant and informative to our society.
