Example and Solution 3B Component Design

The document provides information for Test 1 Question 2 for the 2019/2020 semester 1 session. It includes figures and instructions for 3 sub-questions. Sub-question 1 asks to find the magnitudes of bearing reaction forces at points A and B. Sub-question 2 asks to draw shear force and bending moment diagrams for the shaft. Sub-question 3 calculates all stresses at the shaft's critical point, identifies mean and alternating stresses, and determines safety factors against fatigue and yield failures given material properties.

TEST 1: SKMM3523 COMPONENT DESIGN
SESSION 2019/2020 SEMESTER 1

TIME: 2 HOURS 30 MINUTES

Mark distributions are subject to change without prior notice.

Question 2 (35%)

A bevel pinion and ground finished shaft are shown in Figure . Bearing at A will fully support
the axial load, Fa. The left end of the shaft is coupled to an electric motor, and the right end is
free. Load components applied by the mating bevel gear are shown.
