LAWS OF EXPONENT

Made by:Victor Andre R

1. Product Law of Exponent

Multiplying powers containing the same

base, simply add their
exponents.
I. a x ∙ a^y = a^x+y
II. (a/b)^x ∙ (a/b)^y = (a/b)^x+y
Example 1
solutions:
x^2 ∙ x^4 =x^2+4
= x^6

Apply the Product Law of Exponent

Simplify
Example 2
Solutions:
a^−2∙a^−3∙a^−4=a^(−2)+(−3)(−4)
=a^-9
=1/a^9

Apply the Product Law of Exponent

Simplify
Example 3
Solutions:
2^3∙2^7 = 2^3+7
=2^10
=1024

Apply the Product Law of Exponent

Simplify
Example 4
Solutions:
3^0∙3^5∙3^−3=3^0+5(−3)
=3^2
=9

Apply the Product Law of Exponent

Simplify
Example 5
Solutions:
(2/3)^3∙(2/3)^−3=(2/3)^3(−3)
=(2/3)^0
=1

Apply the Product Law of Exponent

Simplify
Example 6
Solutions:
3x2∙4x^7=(3∙4)(x)^2+7
= 12x^9
Apply the Product Law of Exponent
Simplify by multiplying their
numerical coefficients.
2.Quotient Law of
Exponent
Dividing powers containing the same base, simply subtract
their
exponents.
a. a^x/a^y=a^x−y if x > y, then the resulting power is
positive.
b. a^x/ay=a^0=1 if x = y, then the resulting power is 1.
c. a^x/ay=a^x−y =1/a^x−y if x < y, the resulting power is
negative.
Quick Note:
In mathematics, negative power is not
accepted. To make it a positive
power,use the pattern a^-x=1/ax.
Any number or letter when it is
raised to a zero power such as
a^0,2^0,(-4)^0,and many more,the
result is always 1.
Example 1
Solutions:
x^10/x^6=x^10−6
=x^4
Apply the Quotient Law of Exponent
(a).
Simplify
Example 2
Solutions:
x^10/x^10=x^10−10
=x^0
=1
Apply the Quotient Law of Exponent
(b).
Simplify
Example 3
Solutions:
x^6x/^10=x^6−10
=x^-4
=1/x^4
Apply the Quotient Law of Exponent
(c).
Simplify using the pattern a^−x=1/a^x
Example 4
Solutions:
12a^2b^3/3a^2b^2=12/3a^2−2b^3−2
= 4a^0b^1
= 4(1)b
=4b

Apply the Quotient Law of Exponent

Simplify by dividing their numerical
coefficients.
Example 5
Solutions:
3^4a^2b^8/3^2a^13 = 3^4−2a^2−13b^8
=3^2a^−11b^8
= (9)(1/a11) b^8
=(9)(1)(b^8)/a^11
=9b^8/a11
Apply the Quotient Law of Exponent
Simplify by multiplying (9)(1)(b^8)
then divided by a 11
Example 6
Solutions:
2^4a^7b^−3/2^2a^5b^0=2 4^−2a 7^−5b^(−3)−0
= 2^2a^2b^−3
= (4)(a^2) (1/b^3)
=4a^2/b^3

Apply the Quotient Law of Exponent

Simplify by multiplying (4)(a^2)(1)

then divided by b^3.
3. Power Law of
Exponent

When a power is raised to another power, simply multiply

their exponents.
I. (a^x)^y = a^xy;
II.(a/b)^x= a^x/b^x, b≠0;
III.(a^x/b^y)^z=a^zz/b^yz,b≠0
Example 1
Solutions:
(x^3)^4=x^3∙4
=x^12

Apply the Power Law of Exponent.

Simplify
Example 2
Solutions:
(2/3)^4=2^1∙4 3^1∙4
=2^4/3^4
=16/81

Apply the Power Law of Exponent.

Simplify
Example 3
Solutions:
(a^3/b^6)^7=a^3∙7 b^6∙7
=a^21 b^42

Apply the Power Law of Exponent.

Simplify
Example 4
Solutions:
(3^−1ab0/x^2)^4=3^(−1)∙4a^1∙4b^0∙4/x2∙4
=3^−4a4^b^0/x^8
=(1/3^4)(a^4)(1)/x^8
=1/81a^4/x^8
=a^4/81 x/8
=a^4/81x^8

Apply the Quotient Law of Exponent

Simplify by
 multiplying (1/3^4) (a^4)(1)
then divided by x 8.
 multiplying(1)(a^4) divided by 81.
 dividing 4^4/81/x^8.
