Progress Test 3 - Part 2 - Reading&Speaking
If you ever vist Germany during the warm months of the year, you will see many people
eating outside. Outdoor Cafés and restaurants are an important feature of German culture.
This may be because winters are long and cold in Germany. When spring comes, people
welcome any chance to get outside and enjoy fresh air and sunshine. There are many
types of outdoor restaurants. Many are small and simple with wood or plastic furniture.
Some are large or fancy with metal chairs, cushions and tablecloths. Of course, the menus
can vary a lotfrom region to region. Some cafés or restaurants serve only bread, cakes
and cookies. Others might have full menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You might
alsp find some that only offer one type of dessert, like ice cream. Perhaps areas
specializing in serving the famous German beverage – beer - are the most popular
outdoor eating areas.

NORTHERN LIGHTS
People who live in the far north or south can see an amazing sight at night. The sky will
sometimes appear to be glowing with an incredible light. This light does not come from
the stars in the night sky. Instead, it comes from our own star, the Sun. Very fast particles
called electrons come to the Earth in a steady stream from the Sun. When they hit the
Earth’s magnectic field, they are pushed away towards the North and South Poles. As
they enter the atmosphere at these two points, they hit nitrogen molecules. These nitrogen
molecules absorb the energy, and then release it in the form of light. The result is an
amazing glow of light in the night sky. We call this faint, shimmering light an ‘aurora’.
More people live near the North Pole than the South Pole. That’s why northern auroras
are called ‘the Northern Lights’.
