INTRODUCTION TO SPACE
COLONIES

2

As long as we are a single-planet species, we
are vulnerable to extinction by a planet wide
catastrophe, natural or self-induced. Once we
become a multi planet species, our chances
to live long and prosper will take a huge leap
skyward.” – David Grinspoon

INTRODUCTION TO
SPACE COLONIES

╸ What is a space settlement?

Space settlement is a Permanent Human Habitation
in space by providing all the Life supporting factors
away from the Earth at particular place in space,
which resembles a home like on earth.

5
A picture is worth a
thousand words
A complex idea can be
conveyed with just a single
still image, namely making it
possible to absorb large
amounts of data quickly. So
the idea of space colony is
also explained as shown in the
figure.

6
INTRODUCTION TO
SPACE COLONIES

╸ Why do we require space settlements?

 Pollution
 Over population
 Depleting natural resources
 Natural or Man – made disasters
 Abundant Resources of Space
 Spread the beauty of Humanity
7
INTRODUCTION TO
SPACE COLONIES

╸ Why do we require space settlements?

 To Develop Space Tourism
 For Asteroids mining
 Secure the Human life in the event of any
Catastrophes

INTRODUCTION TO
SPACE COLONIES

╸ How we will construct space settlement?

Permanent communities can be built and inhabited
off the Earth. The focus of the system now is a space
habitat where 10,000 people work, raise families, and
live out normal human lives.

9
INTRODUCTION TO
SPACE COLONIES
Much of the interior of the habitat is illuminated with natural
sunshine. With the help of abundant natural sunshine and
controlled agriculture, the colonists are able to raise enough
food for themselves.
Using solar energy to generate electricity and to power solar
furnaces the colonists refine aluminum, titanium, and silicon
from the lunar ores.
10
INTRODUCTION TO
SPACE COLONIES
We have different ideas of
space colonies.
The beside figure shows
the possible shapes for
designing the space
colonies or space hotels
etc.,
11
INTRODUCTION TO
SPACE COLONIES
The main goal is to design a permanent
community in space that is sufficiently
productive to maintain itself, and exploit
actively the environment of space to an
extent that permits growth, replication,
and the eventual creation of much larger
communities.

12

SPACE COLONIES
The another model is Kalpana Space
colony.

13
INTRODUCTION TO
SPACE COLONIES
The initial community is to be a first step in an expanding colonization of space.
The goals of space settlement are;
1. To design a habitat to meet all the physiological requirements of a permanent population
and to foster a viable social community.
2. Obtain an adequate supply of raw materials and provide the capability to process them.
3. Provide an adequate transport system to carry people, raw materials, and items of trade.
4. Develop commercial activity sufficient to attract capital and to produce goods and
services for trade with Earth.

SPACE COLONIES

╸ Where we can construct a space colony?

 LEO -geocentric orbits with altitudes below 2,000 km (1,200 mi)
 MEO -geocentric orbits ranging in altitude from 2,000 km (1,200 mi) to just
below geosynchronous orbit at 35,786 kilometers (22,236 mi)
 GEO - Geosynchronous (and geostationary) orbits have a semi-major axis
of 42,164 km (26,199 mi) and geosynchronous orbit at 35,786 kilometers
(22,236 mi)
 LAGRANGE POINTS - At the Lagrange points the gravitational forces of
the two large bodies cancel out in such a way that a small object placed
in orbit there is in equilibrium relative to the center of mass of the large
bodies.

LEO ORBIT

Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) is an orbit with

altitude ranging from 200–300 km to 2000
km. In LEO, particles of different origin are
encountered: protons, electrons, heavy ions,
neutrons, and others. Any Orbit lower than
LEO will encounter rapid orbital decay, with
the most significant effect being
atmospheric drag, leading to eventual
termination of the orbit, (yes, that means it
crashes!). Space debris also a problem

17
MEO ORBIT

Medium-Earth Orbit (MEO) is an orbit with

altitude ranging from 2000–36000 km. In
MEO, particles of different origin are
encountered: protons, electrons, heavy ions,
neutrons, and others. MEO will have a less
drag when compared to the LEO but the
problem of Space Debris is still threaten our
space colony.

18
GEO ORBIT

GEO is an orbit with altitude ranging from

36000 km and above. In GEO, the problem
of Space Debris is still threaten our space
colony.

19
LAGRANGE POINTS

Lagrange Points are positions in space

where the gravitational forces of a two body
system like the Sun and the Earth produce
enhanced regions of attraction and
repulsion. These can be used by spacecraft
to reduce fuel consumption needed to
remain in position.

20
LAGRANGE POINTS

Of the five Lagrange points, three are

unstable and two are stable. The unstable
Lagrange points - labeled L1, L2 and L3 - lie
along the line connecting the two large
masses. The stable Lagrange points -
labeled L4 and L5 - form the apex of two
equilateral triangles that have the large
masses at their vertices. L4 leads the orbit
of earth and L5 follows.

INTRODUCTION TO
SPACE COLONIES
When our dream of space colony will come true?
No space colonies have been built so far. Currently, the building of a space
colony would present a set of huge technological and economic
challenges. First Colony Could Cost $100 Billion. NASA wants to send
humans to the moon again by 2024. Those would be the first boots on the
lunar surface since the Apollo program ended over 45 years ago. This time,
however, NASA wants to build a moon-orbiting space station with a
reusable lunar-landing system.
