Experiment 1

The student conducted experiments to measure the resistance, capacitance, inductance, and resonant frequency of an RLC circuit using an oscilloscope. Resistance was measured to be 2194.3 ± 1.0 Ω. Capacitance was measured to be (6.54 ± 0.07) × 10-7 F. Inductance was measured to be (0.94 ± 0.03) × 10-3 H. The resonant frequency was measured to be 5640 ± 17 Hz for both series and parallel RLC circuits. The theoretical resonant frequency calculation was 6418.99 ± 108.04 Hz, which closely matched the direct measurements.

3 3000 80

3. Inductance Measurement

Trial f (Hz) ZL = R0 (Ω)

1 10000 63
2 20000 109
3 30000 178

4. Determination of Resonant Frequency:

1 5680 (Hz) 5680 (Hz)
2 5630 (Hz) 5630 (Hz)
3 5610 (Hz) 5610 (Hz)

III. Data Analysis

1. Resistance Measurement:
We have R X =R0
3

∑ Ri
R x = i=1 =2194.3(Ω)
3

√∑
3
2
( R xi−R x )
i=1
Δ Rx ≈ S . D ≈ =1.0(Ω)
3
Hence:

R x =2194.3 ±1.0(Ω)

2.Capacitence Measurement:
1 1
Z x= =R 0 hence CX=
2 πf C x 2 πf R0
−7 −7
C 1=6.63 ×10 ( F ) ; C 2=6.37 ×10 (F) ; C 3=6.63 ×10−7 (F)
3

∑ C xi
C X = i=1 =6.54 x 10−7 (F )
3

3
ΔC X≈ S.D ≈ ∑ ¿¿¿¿¿
i=1

Hence:

C X = ( 6.54 ±0.07 ) × 10−7 ( F)

3.Inductance Measurement:
R0
Z L =2 πf . L x =R0 hence L x=
2 πf
We have:
L1=1.00 ×10−3 (H); L2=0.88 ×10−3 (H ); L3=0.94 ×10−3 (H )
3

∑ L xi
L x = i=1 =0.94 × 10−3 ( H )
3
√∑
3
2
(L xi−L x )
i=1 −3
Δ L x ≈ S . D≈ =0.03 ×10 (H )
3
Hence:
−3
L X =(0.94 ±0.03)×10 (H )

4.Determination of Resonant Frequency:

a. Series RLC Circuit:
3

∑ f xi
i=1
f x= =5640 (Hz)
3

√∑
3
2
( f Xi−f X )
i =1
Δ f x≈ S .D ≈ =17 ( Hz)
3

Hence:

f X− Series=5640 ± 17(Hz)

b.Parallel RLC Circuit:

3

∑ f xi
i=1
f X= =5640( Hz)
3

√∑
3
2
( f Xi−f X )
i=1
Δ f X ≈ S . D≈ =17( Hz)
3
Hence:

f X−¿ =5640 ±17 (Hz)

c.Theoretical Result and Conclusion

1
f=
2 π √ LC
1
f X= =6418.99(Hz)
2 π √ 0.94 × 10 ×6.54 ×10
−3 −7

√( ) ( )
2 2
−1 0.03 −1 0.07
Δ f X ≈ S . D≈ 6418.99 × × + × =108.04(Hz)
2 0.94 2 6.54

Hence:

f X−Theoretical =6418.99± 108.04 ( Hz )

We can see that:

The theoretical result of resonant frequency is approximately equal to the
directly measured results. We can see that the RLC circuit (with properly
small resistance) becomes a good approximation to an ideal LC circuit.
