VMware vSphere 7
VMware vSphere 7, the new generation of vSphere, addresses key challenges faced by vSphere administrators in the areas of
lifecycle management, security, and performance and resiliency needed by business-critical applications, AI/ML applications, and
latency sensitive applications.
NOTE: VMware vSphere 7 Lifecycle Management (vLCM, formerly called VMware Update manager or VUM) is disabled
in vCenter to ensure VxRail clusters are only updated using the VxRail HCI System Software lifecycle management
functionality. VxRail LCM provides a robust process to upgrade your VxRail clusters with more comprehensive features
than VMware vLCM.
New features
VxRail 7.0.000 adds the following new feature:
● Supports NSX-T on VxRail for systems with two network ports.
Key differences
VxRail 7.0.000 differs from previous versions of VxRail HCI System Software, and from standard vSphere 7 deployments. Some
key differences are:
● VMware vLCM is not supported, and is disabled in vCenter.
VxRail 7.0.0xx 29
● Internet upgrades to VxRail 7.0.000 are not supported. Only local upgrades are supported. Users must use the Dell EMC
SolVe procedure generator to execute the upgrade.
● VxRail appliances based on the Quanta hardware platform are not supported for VxRail 7.0.000.
Upgrade information
NOTE: Due to security patches and critical fixes, it is recommended that you upgrade to VxRail 7.0.132 for all versions of
VxRail Appliance software 7.0.x. Refer to KB 180249 and KB 180250 for more information.
See the Upgrades section of these release notes for important considerations before upgrading, and for details about upgrading
from one specific version to another. See SolVe Online for VxRail for complete information about upgrade procedures.
Be sure to verify that your Dell Technologies partners offer support for vSphere 7.0.

6. Carefully follow the steps in the generated SolVe procedure to upgrade your VxRail.
The generated procedure will include the location of the upgrade bundle files you need.
7. If your VxRail cluster has an external vCenter, follow KB article 543028 to run a manual convergence script.
8. If you are upgrading from a VxRail version below 4.7.301, at 4.7.400, or below 4.5.401, follow KB article 488889 to run a
manual expansion script for the /data/store2 drive.
Upgrade notes
This section lists considerations that must be observed when upgrading VxRail 7.0.xxx.
● VxRail clusters running software 7.0.130 and later have the option to use multipart bundles for local upgrades to 7.0.200 and
later. This requires multiple files to be downloaded before beginning the upgrade.
○ Refer to SolVe Online for VxRail to generate an upgrade procedure listing the required files (VxRail Procedures >
Upgrade > Software Upgrade Procedures).
● All customer-supplied vCenter configurations (deployed external to the VxRail cluster) must upgrade to vCenter 7.0 Update
1 before upgrading to any version of VxRail 7.0.1xx. Before beginning the upgrade, customers must follow manual steps to
update a vCenter setting before upgrading the external vCenter to 7.0 Update 1. Refer to KB 000181307 for the detailed
procedure.
32 Upgrades
● VxRail supports VMware vSphere Quick Boot and Suspend-to-Memory. However due to Quick Boot and Suspend-to-
Memory constraints, we recommend that you do not use Quick Boot or Suspend-to-Memory when updating from previous
versions of VxRail software to 7.0.200 or 7.0.201.
● If you are running VMware solution software integrated with VxRail, be sure to check the specific solution release notes
before upgrading to a later version of VxRail to ensure support and compatibility.
● Upgrades to VxRail 7.0.010 are not supported on VxRail E665 and E665F model appliances. Upgrades to VxRail 7.0.100 and
later releases on VxRail E665 and E665F are supported.
● VxRail appliances based on the Quanta hardware platform are not supported for VxRail 7.0.x.
● For VxRail 7.0.x, the Platform Services Controller (PSC) needs to be embedded in the vCenter Server virtual machine:
○ For clusters with an internal vCenter deployment, the VxRail LCM upgrade to 7.0.x will automatically converge the
external PSC to an internal PSC embedded with the vCenter Server virtual machine.
○ For clusters with a customer-supplied vCenter, the customer is responsible for manually converging the external PSC
into an embedded PSC within the vCenter Server virtual machine before upgrading to VxRail 7.0.x. The user must follow
a VMware-provided procedure to do the conversion, and then run a VxRail provided script to update the PSC information
into the VxRail database. Refer to KB 000021166.
● VMware vSphere 7.0 license keys are required for a cluster to run on vSphere 7.0:
○ The lifecycle management pre-check will not stop a user from upgrading without vSphere 7.0 license keys.
○ Without vSphere 7.0 license keys, the nodes will be running on 60-day evaluation license keys.
○ Users should go my.vmware.com to determine whether their clusters need vSphere 7.0 license keys and acquire them
there as applicable.
● If clusters are using VxRail ecosystem solutions (such as marketplace solutions), check with the ecosystem vendor or the
VxRail Simple Support Matrix for vSphere 7.0 compatibility before upgrading to VxRail 7.0.x.
● For VxRail systems on PowerEdge platforms running VxRail 4.7.2xx (and above) with secure boot enabled, upgrades to
VxRail 4.7.410 (and above, including 7.0.x) do not need to be manually disabled/re-enabled before and after an LCM
upgrade. The upgrade will execute while keeping secure boot enabled on the host. However, users must ensure that no
unsigned VIBs are in the node to prevent adverse effects during a host boot.
● VxRail 7.0.200 and 7.0.201 code is not currently compatible with any RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines release. Consult the
VxRail Simple Support Matrix for the latest supported releases of VxRail with RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines.

upgrades are supported.
NOTE: You may not be able to upgrade your system software in some circumstances:
● If you are using a stretched cluster VxRail configuration and you are running VxRail appliance software version 4.7.212 or
earlier.
● If your cluster is in an unhealthy state or has critical health alarms.
