Engineering Economics
(HU – 301)
Computer science is a branch of engineering that focuses on studying
computers and their systems. Although programming is typically an
important aspect of computer science, it is not the sole focus of the
field. Unlike mechanical engineers, who design and build machines,
computer scientists work with software and hardware systems.
According to the Association of Computing Machinery,
computing occupations are among the highest-paid and most
satisfying. The importance of computer science is known through its
frequent links to innovation, and advances in computing are typically
the catalyst for it. This, in turn, is critical to the country’s
competitiveness.
Future growth prospects are likely to be much higher than they
have been in the past. One may discuss how enticing computer
science careers are because of their flexibility, income potential, and
demand. We have all heard about all of the things we use daily that
were made possible by computer science. However, the humanitarian
side of computer science and the work that people in this industry do
to make the world a better place is rarely discussed.
Computer science is the process of solving complex
organizational problems using technical solutions. The reason this is
such an important field is that computers and technology have been
integrated into virtually every economic sector, industry, and even
organization operating in the modern economy.
Every element of civilization has benefited from computer
science. It is everywhere, from safeguarding our funds to enhancing
our quality of life to enabling equal representation. This has aided the
growth and advancement of our society as a whole. There is virtually
no one whose life is not impacted by computer science today. How
does it impact the lives of the poor section of the society? Well, there
are a lot of different ways in which it has the potential to change their
lives for the better. Some of these ways have been discussed below.
i) Advanced and Affordable Healthcare
Advances in computer science have helped improve the
medical and healthcare facilities in a big way. The diseases
that did not have a cure previously can now be treated
effectively. It is with the knowledge of computer science that
medical equipment is designed that perform tests and
diagnose diseases. Computer Science also assists with the
research and development of novel drugs to treat diseases.
The internet has also made it possible to create a network of
medical institutions, enabling doctors to treat patients
remotely.
But computer science is not only limited to developing
new technology to treat new diseases; it also makes the
existing healthcare cheap and affordable even for the poor
sections of the society. To help the poor sections of the
society medically, computer science has already done enough
on its part, it is now up to the society to help these benefits
to percolate down to the lower sections of the society as
much as possible.

ii) Quality Education and Technological Literacy

The old educational system is being challenged by
computers and the internet, which has opened the door for
Ed Tech. platforms for online learning have totally changed
education. They have fundamentally changed how students
acquire new knowledge, deal with challenges, and complete
assessments, raising the standard of education.
Additionally, online education has made it easier to
reach even the most isolated regions with education,
especially for those who lack the financial means to receive a
high-quality education. Even the schools for the children of
the poor today have computer systems and internet, and
hence the world is truly at their fingertips.
This integration of technology however, does more than
just educate the children, it helps with their inclusion in the
modern world, bringing them a step closer to the mainstream
of the population.

iii) Improved and Affordable Communication

The old barriers have been broken through by
technologies like social networking, video calling, instant
messaging, and other ones, assisting people both personally
and professionally. A better world is a better-connected
world.
With advancements in technology, communication has
not only become easier, but also more affordable. Mobile
phones or even smart phones in the hands of the not so
economically privileged people in not a rare sight anymore.
Even the poor people today have the privilege to
communicate anywhere in the world, thanks to the
development in communication technology. This is specially a
boon for the poor people who often split from their families
and migrate to cities for the sake of employment; they are
now able to stay connected to their families.
This has done far more than just making people to be
able to talk to their loved ones over the phone, for instance it
has enabled quick and easy transfer of money which is a great
benefit for the migratory labour who earlier relied on slow
methods like money order to send money back home.
iv) Predicting and Avoiding Natural Disasters
Computer science provides tools that help monitor the
weather and even predict uncertain, catastrophic situations
much into the future. Computerized tools can accurately
predict earthquakes, storms, torrents, hurricanes, tornadoes,
and other natural disasters. Thus, professionals can be
prepared in advance against such disasters and take
necessary steps to help minimize the resultant damage.
Everyone suffers in a natural disaster but the poor suffer
the most. They often lose their livelihood and even places of
shelter because of a natural disaster. Hence, predicting and
avoiding natural disasters would help them in a big way. For
instance, cyclone announcements can aware the fishermen of
any upcoming cyclones, and may possibly save their lives and
livelihood.

v) Beating Corruption
It is a famous statement and no secret that only a
fraction of the help from the government actually reaches the
poor. The primary reason behind this is the scope for
corruption at all levels because of outdated methods like
maintaining of physical records.
Computer Science and Technology has a big role to play
here. If the records are maintained digitally instead of
physically corruption would definitely take a beating and the
help for the poor people would actually be used by the poor
people.
For instance, previously the wages for the schemes like
MNREGA, or scholarships to the students of government
schools were given in person and physical records were
maintained, leaving a big door open for corruption. However,
now when everyone has a bank account, money is transferred
directly to the beneficiary, eliminating any middle agents and
thereby any corruption.

vi) Fast and Secure Monetary Transactions

In recent years, both online financial frauds and the
availability of technologies to help protect against them have
expanded. This has lessened people's anxiety over their
money being insecure in banks and other financial institutions
while also protecting their hard-earned money.
The situation today is much better than a few years ago,
when all transactions were physical in nature. The
advancement in technology has made transactions fast as
well as secure.
For instance, a migratory labour who needed to send
money back home would first need to rely on someone
travelling back home, or on money orders. This method was
both slow and insecure. But today, he can transfer money
instantly and securely.

vii) Generating and Expanding Employment Horizon

Computer technology offers a fair playing field and is
readily available. The marginalized and minority communities
greatly benefit from this. Computer technology, for instance,
provides equality of opportunity for small and large firms,
men and women, and residents of rural and urban areas alike.
This aspect of computer technology actually gives people
more power and advances society's growth.
The advancement of technology has opened gates for a
lot of employment opportunities. Today one can work even
for an organization in a different time zone altogether.
Technology does not always help by creating new
employment, it can also help in increasing the horizon of what
someone already does.
For instance, a potter today can sell his pottery online,
where he has an access to a much larger marked than he has
in the physical world.

viii) Improving Information Access

One of the greatest benefits of technology is how easy
it is to gather information online. One can not just stay
updated about the matters of his concern on the internet, but
also expand the horizon of his knowledge in general.
Some information can prove to be really vital for
someone. For instance, a farmer who has access to
information about the weather forecast and about the
modern methods of farming would definitely produce a
better yield than one who does not have the same.

ix) Simplifying and Expediting Help

To help someone in need, you also need to know who is
in need. Previously, even if one wanted to help, the max he
could do is donate to some charity or some non profit
organization. Today, with the aid of Computer Science,
helping people in need has become quicker and easier.
A lot of applications exist where one can directly donate
to someone in need. Non-Profit apps like ShareTheMeal not
only help reduce food wastage but also help feed the needy
by making it possible for the excess food to the people in
need. Similarly, today it is possible to donate clothes, books
and almost any other thing to people in need in a much easy
way.

Computer science has positively impacted every aspect of society. It is

omnipresent, from protecting our finances and improving the quality
of life to making equal representation possible. This has facilitated our
civilization’s development and progress as a whole. India is one of the
world’s greatest pools of the technical workforce. The software sector
in India has grown at a phenomenal rate in recent years. With the
situation already so favourable, all that is needed is a little bit of effort
on the part of students like us, to use our knowledge to help uplift the
poor sections of the society.
