Engineering Economics
(HU – 301)
Computer science is a branch of engineering that focuses on studying
computers and their systems. Although programming is typically an
important aspect of computer science, it is not the sole focus of the
field. Unlike mechanical engineers, who design and build machines,
computer scientists work with software and hardware systems.
According to the Association of Computing Machinery,
computing occupations are among the highest-paid and most
satisfying. The importance of computer science is known through its
frequent links to innovation, and advances in computing are typically
the catalyst for it. This, in turn, is critical to the country’s
competitiveness.
Future growth prospects are likely to be much higher than they
have been in the past. One may discuss how enticing computer
science careers are because of their flexibility, income potential, and
demand. We have all heard about all of the things we use daily that
were made possible by computer science. However, the humanitarian
side of computer science and the work that people in this industry do
to make the world a better place is rarely discussed.
Computer science is the process of solving complex
organizational problems using technical solutions. The reason this is
such an important field is that computers and technology have been
integrated into virtually every economic sector, industry, and even
organization operating in the modern economy.
Every element of civilization has benefited from computer
science. It is everywhere, from safeguarding our funds to enhancing
our quality of life to enabling equal representation. This has aided the
growth and advancement of our society as a whole. There is virtually
no one whose life is not impacted by computer science today. How
does it impact the lives of the poor section of the society? Well, there
are a lot of different ways in which it has the potential to change their
lives for the better. Some of these ways have been discussed below.
i) Advanced and Affordable Healthcare
Advances in computer science have helped improve the
medical and healthcare facilities in a big way. The diseases
that did not have a cure previously can now be treated
effectively. It is with the knowledge of computer science that
medical equipment is designed that perform tests and
diagnose diseases. Computer Science also assists with the
research and development of novel drugs to treat diseases.
The internet has also made it possible to create a network of
medical institutions, enabling doctors to treat patients
remotely.
But computer science is not only limited to developing
new technology to treat new diseases; it also makes the
existing healthcare cheap and affordable even for the poor
sections of the society. To help the poor sections of the
society medically, computer science has already done enough
on its part, it is now up to the society to help these benefits
to percolate down to the lower sections of the society as
much as possible.
v) Beating Corruption
It is a famous statement and no secret that only a
fraction of the help from the government actually reaches the
poor. The primary reason behind this is the scope for
corruption at all levels because of outdated methods like
maintaining of physical records.
Computer Science and Technology has a big role to play
here. If the records are maintained digitally instead of
physically corruption would definitely take a beating and the
help for the poor people would actually be used by the poor
people.
For instance, previously the wages for the schemes like
MNREGA, or scholarships to the students of government
schools were given in person and physical records were
maintained, leaving a big door open for corruption. However,
now when everyone has a bank account, money is transferred
directly to the beneficiary, eliminating any middle agents and
thereby any corruption.
