MUSLIM FOLK DANCE

They are known for their mysticism, royalty, and beauty which are evident in their music and dances.
Accompanied by the agong and kulintang, Filipino Muslim dance is marked by intricate hand and arm movement along with
shimmering costumes.

 Pangalay Tribe: Badjao/Origin: Zamboanga del Sur

A pangalay native to the Badjao, sometimes known as the "Sea Gypsies." Pangalay is a dance that emphasizes the agility of the upper body.
The rhythmic bounce of the shoulder with simultaneous alternating waving of arms are the basic movement of this dance. The pangalay is
commonly performed at weddings and other social gatherings.

 Burung-Talo/Origin: Tausug

A form of self defense. The dance like movements show a fight between a hawk and a cat.

 Asik/Tribe: Maguindanao/Origin: Lanao del Sur

A solo slave dance performed by the umbrella-bearing attendant to win the favor of her sultan master. The girl wears long metal fingernails
and dances and poses in doll-like motions. Asik usually precedes a performance of Singkil.

 Pangalay ha Pattong/Tribe: Badjao

A royal couple balance perilously on top of bamboo poles imitating the movements of the picturesque southern boat (the vinta) with colorful
sails gliding across the Sulu Sea.

 Pangalay sa Agong/Origin: Tausug - Sulu

A variation of the Tausug's traditional dance, Pangalay, two warriors vie for the attention of a lass both using gongs to show their prowess
and skill.

KAPPA MALONG-MALONG

The Kappa Malong-Malong is a cultural dance in the Philippines influenced by Muslims. The malong is a tubular garment, and the folk
dance essentially shows the many ways it can be worn. This traditional dance in the Philippines is not only for women though, but there is
also a men’s version of the dance since they wear malongs in different ways.
TRIBAL FOLK DANCE

Filipino Tribal Dance includes the repertory of sacred and secular traditional dances of the Philippines, notable for its
combination of grace and vigor. In the southern regions, the tribes of Mindanao create dances that directly reflect their rich natural
environment. Dancers imitate the graceful movements of birds, fish and boats, celebrate fertility in vigorous movements to the
accompaniment of resonant drumming or gongs, and welcome visitors in delicate swaying dances using fans and scarves. Other
dances include the unique blend of Spanish, Arabic, American and other cultures that have influenced traditional and contemporary
styles.

 Malakas at Maganda
The Malakas at Maganda is a legend and ancient traditional dance wherein it is said that a weary bird
perched on a huge bamboo because it heard some strange noises inside. It pecked the bamboo until it split open and there
came from the inside 'Malakas,' the first man and 'Maganda,' the first woman.
 Kadal Blelah
The kadal blilah or bird dance, represents the blilah (also called blelah), a mythical
bird which, according to Tboli tradition, has the colors of all other birds.

 Kadal Tahaw
Kadal Tahaw A tribal dance performed by T’boli tribe, this dance mimics the hopping and flying behaviour of the
Tahaw bird and is performed to celebrate good harvest.
 Binaylan
Binaylan is a Higaonon and Agusanon Manobo tribal dance that depicts the
movement of a hawk, a hen, and her banog or baby chicks

Malakas at Maganda is a national folklore dance. It tells the story of the origin of the Filipino people on the
islands.

COSTUMES: Tahing Baila


Tahing Baila is a Yakan dance, a low land tribal Philippine folk dance, in which it tries to imitate movements of
fish. From the highlands of Mindanao, is a Musim ethnic group called the Yakan. They are known to wear body-hugging

elaborately woven costumes.


RURAL FOLK DANCE

The dances from the rural Christian lowlands are perhaps the best known and closest to the Filipino heart: a
country blessed with so much beauty. These dances represent the fiesta spirit and a love of life to the Filipinos. They express
joy in their work, adoration for music, and delight in the simple pleasures of life. In the Rural Suite, women typically wear
colorful balintawak and patadyong skirts, while men wear camisa de chino and colored trousers.

 BAYLUHAN

The bayluhan is a dance performed in Malabon and Navotas by childless women who were unable to make the
annual pilgrimage to neighboring Obando to do a prayer-dance for a child. The women wait instead for their friend who
went to the fertility to return, and then they recreate the fertility dance.

 BINASUAN

This colorful and lively dance from Bayambang in the Pangasinan province shows off the balancing skills of the
dancers. The glasses that the dancers gracefully yet carefully maneuver are half-filled with rice wine. Binasuan, meaning
“with the use of drinking glass” in Pangasinan, is often performed as entertainment at weddings, birthdays, and fiestas.

 KADANG-KADANG

This animated wedding dance derived its name from a plant which grows along Dao beach in Antique. It is usually
performed by the parents of the bride and groom during the wedding feast.

 PALU-PALO

In Laguna, the village Labanderas or washwomen, spend relatively calm day by doing their laundry when tsismis
or gossip among them gets out of hand and drama ensues. Through fighting with their palos (laundry paddles) to resolve
their disputes, their dance come to life.

COSTUMES:

Typical attire in the Rural Suite include the colorful balintawak and patadyong skirts for thewomen, and camisa
de chino and colored trousers for the men.

MARIA CLARA FOLK DANCE


Maria Clara is the main female character in Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere, a literary piece that features the colonial
situation of the Filipinos during the Spanish regime. She was characterized as a Filipina woman of virtue and nobility. This
dance is a mix of Spanish gracefulness and customized native props, such as bamboo castanets and Asian fan. Female
dancers wear Maria Clara dress that typifies the European style, while men are in barong tagalog, a traditional Filipino
embroidered long-sleeve shirt made of pineapple fiber..

EXAMPLES:

 Cariñosa 

Cariñosa is a Philippine folk dance of Hispanic origin. It is closely associate with the island of Panay and the Visayas region
in general. The word cariñosa is from the Spanish cariñosa meaning the affectionate one. Most Filipina women can be
described as karinyosa.
 ARAY

Aray - a dance whose words are sung in "Chabacano-ermitense," a hybrid of Spanish that was only spoken in the
Ermita district before the turn of the century and today is extinct. The dance itself is a flirtatious one that involves graceful
use of the pañuelo, or shawl, and tambourines. Aray means "ouch" in Tagalog

 ALCAMFOR

Alcamfor -The dance originated from Leyte, a province in Visayan Region. It is so named because of the handkerchief the
girl holds laced with camphor oil, a substance which suposedly induces romance. 

 HAVANERA DE HOVENCITA

 Havanera de Hovencita -A wedding party dance which originated in the town of Botolan in the Zambales Province. Typical
sequences include the procession of the bride and groom's parents, lineup of the bridesmaids and groomsmen upstage, and a
solo featuring the wedding couple. 

COSTUMES:

Maria Clara dress is an elegant formal outfit for women with clean lines that symbolize the virtues and nobility of
a Filipino woman. It originated from the local baro't saya. It is one kind of traditional dress worn by Filipino women.
