Answer any FIVE questions

All questions carry equal marks

1. A square slab of side ‘L’ is subjected to 700C on its right side,
1400C on its left side, 100C on its top side and 2200C on its
bottom. Considering the mesh size x = y = L / 3 , obtain the steady
state temperature distribution for the square slab using Gauss
Siedel method what is the temperature distribution at the end of
four iterations?

2. List out the properties of numerical solution methods in detail.

3. A stainless steel rod of 20mm diameter is carrying an electric

current of 1000A. The thermal and electrical conductivities are
20W/mK and 1.25 × 104 (Ω cm) −1. What is the temperature
distribution from centre to surface if the outer surface is kept at
4500C taking the mesh size as 2mm? Compare the finite difference
values with the values obtained analytically and tabulate both.

4. Using Von Neumann stability analysis, obtain the criterion for

stability of explicit scheme for discretization of 1D parabolic
equation.

5.a) Enumerate the various steps of finite volume formulation and solve
d 2T x=0 T =0
= S at
dx 2
x =1 T =1
b) Discuss the three types of boundary conditions present in heat
conduction problems.

6. Using the generalized formulation of 1D convection diffusion,

explain and assess the CDS scheme of Interpolation.

7. Explain how the pressure gradient term is eliminated from the

momentum equations using vorticity-stream function method?
What are the disadvantages of this method in determination of flow
field?

8. Write short notes on any two:

a) Normalized residue b) Burgers equation
c) Upwind of interpolation for 1D convection diffusion problem.
