DEFINITION

Basic estimating is the analysis


of the work to be performed,
including the type of quantity of
the work, the type and size of the
equipment to be used during
construction, production rates of
labor and equipment to install
the work and other job site
conditions that are unique to the
project and that can impact time
and cost of construction.

ROLE OF AN ESTIMATOR
To be an estimator, an individual needs to go a step further. He or she must:

• Be able, to visualize the project


• Have enough construction experience productivity
• Have sufficient knowledge of labor operations and
• Be able to keep a database of information
• Be computer literate
• Be able to meet bid deadlines and still remain calm.
• Have good writing and presentation skills.

• BILL OF QUANTITIES
• A Bill of Quantities or BOQ is a document used for tendering in the construction
industry. It contains a list of materials or supplies in which the cost for all parts or rates
for combined materials and labor and their costs are itemized.

• Bill of Materials is a list of each individual material item required in order to complete
the whole project or process.

PROJECT REQUIREMENT:

Project (by group) for Module 2

1. Refer to the layout of Two-Storey Residential Unit


2. Estimate the following structural members:
1. Siteworks (Excavation, Disposal, Backfill)
2. Rebar works (total kg of rebar per structural members)
3. Concrete (total volume per floor)
4. Formworks (total area per floor)
5. Finishing (plastering, painting, tilting works, etc.)
3. Prepare a Bill of Quantities and computation of each structure in an excel file.
4. Include the updated price list of the materials.
5. Provide your references.

Criteria:
Written Report (A4 bondpaper) – 50%
Project Presentation (Individual) - 30%
Project Presentation (Report) - 20%
