LESSON

There are different kinds of propaganda devices the speakers used.

These are Bandwagon, Card stacking, Glittering generalities, Testimonial,
Name-calling, Plain folks, Testimonial and Transfer.
Bandwagon is a device used to influence people by telling them that everyone
is using the same product and that you should be using the product too,
if you do not want to be left behind. The term bandwagon means, to
“jump on the bandwagon,” to follow what others are doing, or to conform.
Bandwagon is when people try to attract more people into doing/buying
something simply because everyone else is doing it too.
Example 1
Explanation: This toothbrush advertisement is an
example of bandwagon. The ads is trying to convince
the people to use the same brand for this is the most
dentist and hygienists, used and trusted brand.
Example 2
Explanation: Another example of bandwagon because
of the line "The drink everybody knows". It implicates
that everyone loves this coke product so more people
should buy it.

Card Stacking is the most common technique, it exaggerates and highlights

only the positive facts and figures and hides negative and do not say any
information about the competitors.
Example 1
Explanation: This commercial of detergent is an example
of card stacking. It talks about oxy clean and all of its
benefits but does not compare them to the qualities of
their competitors. It did not say anything about the other brand.
Example 2
Explanation: This pizza store marketing strategy is an
example of card stacking. It highlights only the positive
figure of their pizza and do not compare to other pizza
brand.

Glittering generalities is a technique that uses emotionally appealing

words or virtue words that make you approve an idea without basis and
without really examining the details. Glittering words like hope, change,
possibility, justice, assurance, safety, praises and others that gives off
an extremely positive vibe.
Example 1
Explanation: The line, “Your in good hands with
Metrobank” makes this an example of this device.
It gives the people an assurance that banking with
them means safety of their fortune.
Example 2
Explanation: Another example of glittering
generality, in this ad, it did not mention on how
the coffee is better than the rest, but because of
the praising word “For the best you” makes you
think that drinking this coffee makes you the best version of yourself.
And who doesn’t want to be the best, right?

Name-calling / Trash Talking is the total contrast of glittering

generalities. It uses negative information that causes to create a negative
opinion or idea to something or someone because of the bad opinions they
hear, see, observe or read, sometimes it suggested a fight. This is common
between two brands that are similar, well-known, and have rivalry.
Example 1
Explanation: This is quite self-explanatory.
Although the name of the rival brand (McDonald’s)
is not found anywhere in the ad, their signature
Big Mac box has been used. And the message is
clear: The Whopper is so big that it can’t fit into the box that holds the
Big Mac. So basically, you are getting a bigger burger than the famous
Big Mac.
Example 2
Explanation: Everyone knows that they are the
mascots of the two different giant food chains in the
country. No words, no line but the image itself
shows that there is
rivalry happening between them.

Plain folks is the device that works in a way to establish that the speaker is
a regular or an ordinary person and has the same views and opinions as the
people he is appealing to. It creates the sense of camaraderie between the
speaker and his audience which helps build belief in the idea. You can
relate more to the experiences of people like yourself. This is opposite of
Testimonial.
Example
Explanation: This image falls in to plain folk’s
propaganda showing 2 young ordinary people who just
so happen to be smiling and enjoying the cup instant
noodles, which is loved also by most ordinary people.

Testimonial is a device that uses famous and high respected personality

or celebrity like actor, actress politician and others, to endorse a certain view,
an idea or a product. This is an effective propaganda device that often works
wonders to influence an audience.
Example
Explanation: The famous member of Korean Boy band
BTS (Jungkook) gave his testimony about the fabric
softener Downy as the best fabric conditioner and made
his fans also used the product

Transfer is a device also known as association device. It uses well –respected

or negative symbols, quotes, or images to convey a message. This device can
be used to create positive and negative feelings about something or someone.
Example1
Explanation: This is an example of transfer where
in an apple fruit is associated to health
precautionary measures. Giving a message of by
eating an apple a day will avoid you from sickness
so it will keep the doctors away.
Example 2
Explanation: This is an example of transfer
where in a cigarette brand uses leather which
is usually used by strong cowboy persuades
the audiences or consumers to identify
smoking with the rugged, is a strength of an
American Cowboy.
