Introduction To Process Simulation (With DWSIM)

The document provides an overview of the ChE Design 2 course at Bicol University College of Engineering. The objectives are to teach students how to prepare process simulations and material/heat balances for unit processes or plants. It discusses common process simulation tools like Aspen and DWSIM. It also outlines the overall workflow for process engineering design including simulation, equipment sizing, flow diagrams, and optimization. Examples of simulation of a steam power cycle using DWSIM are shown and results are verified against literature values with good agreement.

ChE Design 2:
Introduction to Process Simulation

Engr. Sandino Michael Angelo G. Aguilar, ChE

Email: [email protected]
Objectives
• To learn how to prepare Process Simulation and create
a Heat and Material Balance for a Unit Process or
overall plant.
• Able to apply theoretical knowledge of different Unit
operations to actual plant operations
• To teach student how to apply engineering
judgement, pick-up data/information from various
sources.
Process Simulation
• Simulation (Upstream Work) – downstream activities rely on simulation
results for engineering works.
• Heat and Material Balance is obtained from Process Simulations /
Modelling
• Related process design activities are dependent from simulation results.
• Reliability of simulation means reliable data for downstream disciplines
(i.e Mechanical Engrs, Instrument Engrs, Static Equipment Engrs, Rotary
Engrs, etc)

(Van Ness, Smith & Abbott)
Steam generated in a power plant at a pressure of 8,600 kPa and a
temperature of 500oC is fed to a turbine. Exhaust from the turbine
enters a condenser at 10 kPa, where it is condensed to a saturated
liquid, which is then pumped to a boiler.
Pump and Turbine efficiency : 0.75
Power cycle rate : 80,000 kW
