Ohms Law

This document outlines an experiment to determine the resistivity of a wire using Ohm's law. Key steps include: [1] Arranging apparatus to pass current through a wire and measure potential difference; [2] Taking multiple readings of current and potential difference and plotting them on a graph; [3] Using the graph slope and wire dimensions to calculate resistance and resistivity. The results verify Ohm's law and provide the resistance and resistivity of the wire.

OHM’S LAW

AIM: To determine resistivity of given wire by plotting a graph for potential difference versus
current.

APPARATUS: A resistance wire, voltmeter, ammeter, battery, rheostat, meter scale, one way
key, connecting wires and screw gauge.

THEORY:

Ohm’s law states that the electric current passing through a conductor is directly proportional to
the potential difference applied across its ends.

Mathematically, 𝑉 ∝ 𝐼, V = IR

Where, R is the resistance of the conductor. R depends upon the nature of material, temperature
& dimensions of the conductor.
𝑅𝐴 𝑅𝜋𝐷 2
Resistivity of the material of a given wire is 𝜌 = =
𝐿 4𝐿

Where R is resistance, A is area of cross section of the wire, L is length of wire, D is the
diameter of the given wire and ρ is resistivity.

PROCEDURE :

1. Arrange the apparatus as shown in figure.

2. Make neat, clean and tight connections according to the circuit diagram. Connect the
ammeter and voltmeter with their correct polarity.
3. Determine the least count of voltmeter and ammeter, and also note the zero error, if any.
4. Insert the key K, slide the rheostat contact and see that ammeter and voltmeter are
working properly.
5. Adjust the rheostat to get small deflection in ammeter and voltmeter
6. Record the readings of the voltmeter and ammeter.
7. Take at least six sets of readings by adjusting the rheostat gradually.
8. Plot a graph with V along X axis and I along Y axis.
9. The graph will be straight line which verifies Ohm’s law.
10. Determine the slope of the V-I graph. The reciprocal of the slope gives the resistance of
the wire.
11. Measure the length of the given wire using ordinary scale and the diameter of the wire
using screw gauge.

RESULT:

i. Ohm’s law is verified

ii. The resistance of the given wire is _________Ω
iii. Resistivity of wire is ___________ Ωm
PRECAUTIONS:

1. All the connections must be neat and tidy.

2. Voltmeter and Ammeter must be in proper range.
3. The key should be inserted only when taking readings.

SOURCES OF ERROR

1. Zero adjustment might not be proper

2. Wire may not be of uniform cross-section
3. Personal errors.
