1 Laws on Radicals
What’s In
𝑚
𝑛
Rational exponent can be written as 𝑎 𝑛 = √𝑎𝑚 . Take a look at the
following illustrations:
1
𝑎2 = √𝑎 If no index appears in the radical expression,
it is understood that the index is 2.
3
5
𝑎5 = √𝑎3 The index is 5 and the radicand is 𝑎3 .
Change the following given below into radical form or exponential form. Write
your answer on separate sheet/s of paper.

What’s New
What is It!
The laws on radicals are derived directly from the laws on exponents.
These will help us to simplify the radicals much easier. Look and study the
following laws on radicals, assume that when n is even, 𝒂 > 𝟎.
𝒏 𝒏
𝒏𝒕𝒉 𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝒂 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑤𝑒𝑟 𝒏 𝑖𝑠 𝒂 𝒏
√𝒂𝒏 = ൫ √𝒂൯ = 𝒂
Derivation:
𝑛
𝑛
√𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎𝑛 Transform the given radical expression to exponential form.
= 𝑎1 Simplify the exponent.
=𝑎 Any number raised to 1 is equal to itself.
𝑛 1 𝑛
൫ 𝑛√𝑎൯ = ቀ𝑎𝑛 ቁ Transform the given radical expression to exponential form.
𝑛

√𝑎𝑏 = (𝑎𝑏)𝑛 Transform the given radical expression to exponential form.
1 1
= (𝑎 ) 𝑛 (𝑏 )𝑛 Power of a Product
𝑛

Examples:
1. √27 = √9 ∙ √3 = 3√3
3 3 3 3
2. √16𝑥 5 = √23 𝑥 3 ∙ √2𝑥 2 = 2𝑥 √2𝑥 2
Derivation:
