USING A FIRE EXTINGUISHER
SAFETY AWARENESS No. 3
The P.A.S.S. Method of Using a Fire Extinguisher
If you need to use a fire extinguisher, remember the P.A.S.S method for how
to use it safely and effectively. Each letter represents one of the four steps to
use the fire extinguisher:
When you go through the PASS
steps, hopefully this puts the fire
out. But it needs to be pointed out
that fire extinguishers have
limitations. If the fire is larger than
a trash can, don’t attempt to put it
out with a small, standard fire
extinguisher. Pull the fire alarm
and evacuate the worksite.
GASOLINE EXPOSURE
SAFETY AWARENESS No. 4

Gasoline is a toxic and extremely flammable liquid. It comprises compounds

called hydrocarbons, which include alkanes, benzene, toluene, and xylenes.
When even small quantities of hydrocarbons enter the bloodstream, it can
reduce the functioning of the central nervous system and cause organ damage.
Gasoline is not just toxic when people ingest it. A person can also sustain
damage to the skin, eyes, and lungs when they come into contact with gasoline
liquid or the fumes or vapors of gasoline.
• Wearing gloves and protective clothing and respirator masks
when handling gasoline
• Washing the skin thoroughly as soon as any gasoline comes
into contact with it
• Not purposefully sniffing or huffing gasoline
• practicing gasoline safety habits when handling or storing other
products that contain hydrocarbons

UNSAFE ACTS
SAFETY AWARENESS No. 7
Unsafe acts are responsible for the majority of
workplace incidents that result in injuries or
property loss
Reasons for Unsafe Acts:
• Taking shortcuts
• Being complacent
• Overconfidence
• Ignoring rules or procedures
• Poor attitude
There is a magnitude of reasons behind why unsafe acts occur. Despite what the
reason may be for the unsafe act, one thing is for sure- injuries will occur over time if
they continue to take place. Unsafe acts are the root of the majority of injuries on the
job and when paired with unsafe conditions it is likely someone will be injured. All too
often it is the person who is responsible for the unsafe act that is injured. Even worse
is when a bystander is injured due to the unsafe actions of another person.
