Statistics & Probability Quarter 3 Week 1 Day1&2

1. A student was given a performance task involving a shipment of 5 computers, 3 of which were received randomly. The sample space and random variable X representing the number of defective computers were defined. Possible values of X are 0, 1, 2, 3. 2. Another task involved tossing 4 coins and defining the random variable Y for the number of heads. Possible values of Y are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4. 3. For the second task, the probability distribution of Y was constructed and a corresponding histogram drawn. Evaluation questions determined whether other probability distributions summed to 1.

Statistics & Probability Quarter 3 Week 1 Day1&2

Day 1 (Performance Task A, Evaluation A #2 only, Evaluation B)

Performance Task A:
Problem: A shipment of five computers contains that are slightly defective. If a retailer receives
three of these computers at random, list the elements of the sample space S using the letters D and N
for defective and non-defective computers, respectively. To each sample point, assign a value x of the
random variable X representing the number of computers purchased by the retailer which are slightly
defective.

Conclusion:

Therefore, the possible values of x are: 0,1,2, and 3

Evaluation A
2. Four coins are tossed. Let Y be the random variable representing the number of heads that occur. Find
the values of the random variable Y.
