Rizalista: A Closer Look

Activity 1

1. How do Rizalista groups view Jose Rizal and other national heroes?

The Rizalista groups view Jose Rizal as the second Christ, the second son of God, the God
of the pre-Spanish Malay religion, and some believe that he is God himself. But some of them
sees Rizal as a spiritual guide.

2. What are the similarities between Jesus Christ and Rizal as seen by millenarian groups?

They conclude that there are obvious similarities between Jose Rizal's life and that of Jesus
Christ. Some of them even believe that Rizal was the incarnation of Christ. The traits and
characteristics that are similar include:

1. Both Jesus Christ and Jose Rizal were morally upright and exemplary in their own rights.
2. Both Jesus Christ and Jose Rizal where Asians.
3. Both Jesus Christ and Jose Rizal were originated from countries which were under foreign
rule during their time.
4. Both Jesus Christ and Jose Rizal possess extraordinary character and have the purest
intention in pursuing their missions.
5. Both Jesus Christ and Jose Rizal were healers and great visionaries.
6. Both Jesus Christ and Jose Rizal messianic in their own rights and victims of trial by mockery.
7. Both Jesus Christ and Jose Rizal were executed by their enemies.
8. Both Jesus Christ and Jose Rizal died for a noble cause.

3. Name some influential women in various Rizalista groups and explain their significant their roles
in their respective organizations.
1. Maria Bernarda Balitaan – She founded the Ciudad Mistica de Dios. She also a Benedictine
nun who left her convent to find the indigenous religious movement and is now venerated
by her followers as a saint.
2. Dr. Severina Luna Orosa – She founded the female counterpart organization of the Knights
of Rizal (KOR) in 1957, which spreads the ideals and beliefs of Dr. Jose Rizal.

Activity 1

1. Describe the background of Rizal’s ancestry that might have contributed to his life and
education.

Jose Rizal, son of a Filipino father and a Chinese mother, came from a wealthy family.
Despite his family's wealth, they suffered discrimination because neither parent was born in the
peninsula. Rizal studied at the Ateneo, a private high school, and then to the University of St.
Thomas in Manila.

2. Compare the experience of Rizal as a student in Ateneo Municipal, UST and in Madrid.

Jose Rizal was the kind of person that willing to learn new things. In Ateneo Municipal, he
receives a Bachelor of Arts degree with the highest honors. Then in UST, he studies Philosophy but
Rizal shifted course from Philosophy to Medicine because of his mother’s failing eyesight. While in
Madrid, Rizal received a degree in medicine from the Central University of Madrid at the age of 23.

3. Who were the important persons that influenced Rizal in his intellectual pursuits?

The important person that influenced Rizal was his brother, Paciano. He was a significant
influence on his intellectual pursuits, and he mentored Rizal throughout his life. Then Rizal
considered him as second parent. Another important person that influences Rizal was Leon Monroy.
Leon Monroy was the one who educated Rizal and improve Rizal’s skill in reading and writing a basic
Latin. Last is the most important that influence Rizal in his intellectual pursuits was his mother, Doña
Teodora Alonso. She guided Rizal, and she was the reason why Rizal studies medicine.

4. What were Rizal’s activities in Dapitan and their impact?

In Dapitan, Rizal established an informal school where he instructed several children. He


also had patients that sought him out to be healed. There are agricultural activities in Dapitan where
Rizal also enjoying by participating in it. Rizal also fell in love with Josephine Bracken and began an
intimate connection with her.

5. How would you assess Rizal’s objection to the revolution?

Rizal objected in their planning of revolution because he believed that it was not mature
thinking. The reason why Rizal objected is because the people was not ready for a revolution.
Because they must first be collected weapons and funds before starting the revolution. For Rizal, the
best weapons were his knowledge and skills, not creating a war.

1. Create a timeline of Rizal’s Childhood and Early Education

1861

On June 19, 1861, Dr. Jose Protasio Rizal-Mercado y Aloso-Realonda was born. He was the 7 th child of
Teodora and Francisco Rizal.

1870

Rizal begins school under Mr. Justiniano Aquin Cruz at just 9 years old.

1871

Dr. Jose Rizal continues his education under Master Lucas Padua in a public school in Calamba.

1872

Rizal is examined by those incharge of college entrance to St. Tomas University in Manila; he enters the
school system as a scholar.

1875

Rizal enters the Ateneo as a boarder at just 14 years of age.

1876

At the age of 15, Rizal receives a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the Ateneo de Manila. He not only
receives it with the highest honors.

1877

On June Jose begins to go to school at St. Tomas University in Manila where he studies philosophy.

1878

Rizal shifted courses from Philosophy to Medicine because of his mother's failing eyesight.

During this time, he also writes an additional two poems that win him further recognition.

1880

At the age of 19 Rizal writes another poem for a competition where he should have won first

prize. However, he was not given this prize due to discrimination.

In December Rizal produced his first Operetta called On the Banks of the Pasig.

1881

In November 25 Rizal acquired the title of "perito agrimensor" (expert surveyor when he studied a
vocation course in Ateneo).
1882

In May Rizal gets money from his brother and travels secretly from Manila to Spain aboard a French ship
and railroad entering Spain at the Port Bou.

In June, St. Tomas University realizes Rizal is nowhere to be found and threatens to take land away from
his father who is a tenant even though his father has no idea of his whereabouts.

June 15 Rizal makes his arrival in Barcelona and begins to study again in Madrid in October of that same
year.

1886

Rizal received a degree in medicine from the Central University of Madrid at the age of 23. He then
becomes an assistant to Dr. L. de Wecker and visits many universities in Berlin, Leipzig, and Heidelberg in
the country of Germany

La Liga Filipina in one column and examples of how these aims could be attained in other
column.
