AS5282 Tool Steel Ring Supersedes Number

This instrument was electro-magnetically calibrated in accordance with SAE/AMS AS5282. Calibration was conducted using
a Magwerks custom built three-phase, full wave DC power supply for magnetization. Power measurements were take using
a Magwerks model INFB65, 6.5 digit ammeter calibrated to an accuracy of better than .1% and cross checked with the
calibration equipment listed below (for electrical calibration), all maintained in Magwerks Corporation's Metrology Laboratory.
Data acquisition and plotting was done with a custom built motorized test fixture coupled to a hall-effect magnetic sensor
instrument feeding a computerized data acquisition system. The steel used, heatreating and procedures used meet or
exceed all specifications in, ASTM E-1444 05 & SAE/AMS AS5282.

Certification Notes
Ketos / AS5282 Tool Steel Ring

Special Notes for Test Rings:

The intent of the heat-treatment specified under the 9-hole AS5282 test ring, as well as the original 12-hole “Ketos” test ring
is to make the ring magnetically homogeneous.

If either style ring is magnetically homogeneous, the leakage field strength produced by each hole and measured at the outer
perimeter surface will vary as a function of the distance, i.e. the deeper the hole, the weaker the field strength.

SAE / AS5282 does not require more than 9 holes in the test ring, but it does require that the magnetic relationship between
those holes be very specific and under this type of requirement, anytime a successively deeper hole’s value exceeds the
previous one, the ring fails.
1
Since AS5282 only requires 9 holes in the ring, the literal interpretation of the specification is that any failure in the magnetic
analysis after hole 9 is irrelevant.

The original 12-hole Ketos Ring had no written requirement for magnetic analysis, even though the intent for magnetic
homogeneity was the same as the AS5282 ring, and if the proper heat-treatment was followed, it would be.

Many OEM producers of test rings (including Magwerks) manufacture all of their rings as 12-hole rings and then certify them
under the AS5282 guidelines.

Magwerk’s internal requirement for all of the new rings that we sell, states that they must meet the intended magnetic
relationship between not only the first 9 holes, but for all 12 holes.
2
There are times that an irrelevant reading may exhibit itself on the graph (such as a ding on the surface) and produce no
Ill-effect on the verification or certification. There are other times that such a ding renders the ring un-certifiable, but arguably
still usable under non-certifiable conditions, such as a ding on the hole itself, or the outside diameter too beat up for the
followers to roll on. The effect of a ding over the hole itself would be to distort the measured value such that the “real” leakage
value would become unverifiable due to the distortion of the magnetic field created by the ding.

Because of the variables mentioned above, there are times where Magwerks will still issue certifications where the graphs
shown are less than ideal.
