Context
Manipulation can be a key part of the creative process. Having the ability to control how
something looks after the production of a piece can be beneficial skill to learn, especially if
making copies or uploading work to a website.
Manipulation can influence how an audience sees an image and how it is understood. When
something is manipulated is it still the same? Does it still mean the same thing? How could
the communication of the meaning be improved by manipulation?
Does the communication of a piece change with its presentation? Can something be
manipulated, presented and an audience not realise?
Brief
Your task during the next two weeks is to create a piece of work, this could be a
photograph, a drawing, a painting, a screen-print, a collection of material samples. The
maximum size of this piece should be A3 so it can be scanned and saved in JPEG format.
You will then use this piece in Adobe Photoshop and will manipulate it using a series of tools
to change the appearance, content and create pattern.
You will then explore different forms of presentation (for example online or in a gallery) to
discover the most effective manner for presenting the work and discover whether different
presentation formats can effect the audience’s perception of a piece.
Primary research could involve visiting a gallery and looking at presentation techniques.
You could also look at online exhibitions, books in the library and the concept of sculpture
parks.
It is important to document all the processes you are taught, research and practice so you
can record the learning process and analyse the processes and results.
By the end of this brief, you should have produced six different examples of manipulations
using Photoshop and explored presenting them in at least three different locations or ways.
You should analsye and evaluate each technique you use, along with the strengths and
weaknesses of each.
You should show a range of experimental outcomes to show you have explored,
understood, identified and selected appropriate ways of manipulating your
original piece and show consideration for the presentation format.
