1.3 Confidentiality
This document contains confidential information belonging to Danelec Marine A/S and Inmarsat.
Do not disclose any part of this document to any third party.
- The VRS 002 (Vessel Remote Server) and PoE injector installed in the FX Rack
The VRS 002 is connected to the FX Rack and will send data reports using SFTP protocol to an
onshore server at fixed intervals. The VRS 002 is connected to the FX Rack on PORT 7 on the
CISCO Router. This port has been pre-configured to communicate using DHCP with the VRS 002
LAN port 5.
The VRS 002 is delivered pre-configured from Danelec Marine and only a few parameters need to
be configured by the technician during the installation.
The VRS 002 is connected via LAN connection directly to the vessels VDR/S-VDR.
The VRS will over this connection gather serial and analog data from the VDR.
3 Pre-Installation
3.1 Vessel preparation
Before the installation of the FleetData components the vessel should already have prepared the
following:
- A CAT5 STP cable between VDR location and FX Rack with enough cable in each end for
good cable management and termination.
Before boarding the vessel ensure you have the latest version of the following:
Note that for a Danelec Manufactured VDR the PoE is not used. Do not connect the VDR to the
Ethernet of the PoE module.
5.1 Pre-Checks
- A CAT5 Patch cable is connected between VRS 002 LAN port 5 and CISCO 891-24X port
7
- 24VDC is present on the VRS 002 WAGO plug and that the LEDs on the connected LAN
ports indicates link and traffic (blinking)
- Connect your Laptop to LAN port 1 on the VRS 002 and login as described in Appendix 1:
Connecting to the VRS002 + DFS and Restore.
- Check the VRS 002 firmware version. It must be version 3.45 of higher. If the software
version is lower than 3.45, upgrade the software as described in Appendix 3: How to
update the VRS 002 Firmware
- Make sure Data Collection is set to “On” and click “Save” before exiting the menu.
Perform a test to check that the outbound connection to the shore server can be established.
If the test is successful, the VRS 002 installation in the FX rack is completed.
If the test is failed it indicates a connection issue which could be cause by the following:
Firmware problem
Make sure the firmware version is 3.45 or higher. If lower, it must be upgraded to at least 3.45
Cable problem
Check connection between VRS 002 and Cisco Router:
- Is the Ethernet cable well connected to LAN port 5 on the VRS 002?
- Is the Ethernet cable well connected to LAN port 7 on the Cisco router?
- Is the “Link” and “Data” LEDs on both VRS 002 and Cisco router on and blinking?
6 Connection to VDR
6.1 Pre-checks
Before connecting the VRS 002 to the Danelec manufactured VDR the following must be
checked:
See Appendix 2: How to connect and adjust a Danelec Marine VDR for instructions on how to
login and adjust the Danelec manufactured VDR.
6.2 Connect the Ethernet cable between VRS 002 and VDR
- Crimp RJ45 plugs on each end of the cable between VRS 002 (In FX rack) and VDR
- Connect the cable to an available LAN port configured for 10.0.0.X Subnet on the VDR
while observing the below:
- In a few cases an external Ethernet switch may be required if there are no free LAN ports
available on the VDR. In that case, a standard marine approved ethernet switch (100mb
ports) is required. Move one LAN connection on the 10.0.0.X Subnet to the Ethernet switch
and install a LAN cable between the Ethernet switch and the free LAN port on the VDR.
Connect the cable from the VRS 002 in an available port on the switch.
The VRS 002 will indicate if the test is successful or unsuccessful. Click on the “Additional
details” to get more details about the test:
A successful test:
If VRS 002 is unable to detect the VDR it indicates a connection issue which could be caused by
the following:
Cable problem
Check cable between the VRS 002 and the VDR:
- Is the Link LED on the VRS 002 LAN port 3 On with occasional blinking?
- Is the Link LED on the VDR where the cable is connected, On with occasional blinking?
- Is cable and RJ45 plugs in OK condition
- Is the VDR LAN port used for connection to the VRS 002 configured to be in the 10.0.0.X
subnet (See Appendix 2: How to connect and adjust a Danelec Marine VDR?
- Check that LAN port number 3 in the VRS 002 is configured with IP address 10.0.0.90
- In the VRS “Main menuConfigurationVDR Connection
o Check that the VDR IP address has been set to 10.0.0.100
o Check that the VDR username is set to “svdr”
- Re-Enter the VDR password “password” in the VDR password field and click “Save”
7 Data verification
Use the VDR Explore software to check and verify that serial data is present in the VRS.
- Connect Laptop to LAN port 1 on the VRS 002 (Laptop network adaptor must be set to
10.1.0.X subnet).
- Select “Live” and connect as “Guest” and type in “10.1.0.80” in the IP address field.
- Click on “Connect” the VDR Explore will now connect live to the data stream from the
VDR through the VRS 002.
- Check the Serial status tabs (there may be more than one) for the serial data. You can click
on the small arrow next to the serial channel name to expand the channel. In the serial
monitor tab look for the require NMEA data. If present, then the VRS 002 is able to acquire
it.
Before installation, the VDR status (if any error exist etc.) should be thoroughly documented so it
can be demonstrated after the installation that new errors have not been introduced.
- Check the BAU (Bridge alarm panel) is not showing any errors, Red LED and Indication in
Display
- Log in to the VDR (see Appendix 2: How to connect and adjust a Danelec Marine VDR)
and run the VDR verifier application available from the main menu (bottom of page)
- Check that no errors are displayed in the BCP (Bridge Control Panel)
- Initiate an OPT (Operational Performance Test) from the BCP (Main menuPerform
OPT) and check that system is in the same state as before the FleetData installation

Sperry Marine:
VM II S-VDR / VM II VDR / VM III S-VDR / VM III VDR / VM IV S-VDR
All LAN ports on the VDR will have the same IP address. The default IP address is 10.0.0.100 and
is only very rarely changed. If you can login to the VDR using IP 10.0.0.100 then no further is
required and the VRS 002 can be connected to any available port on the VDR.
Danelec Marine:
DM100 VDR / DM100 S-VDR G2
Sperry Marine:
VM IV VDR
The IP address of each LAN port can be individually configured. LAN port 1 of the VDR (marked
“DATA”) however, is always 10.0.0.100.
LAN port 1 should normally not be connected to anything. If it is connected and you are unable to
connect to the VDR on IP 10.0.0.100 on any other LAN port. Disconnect the cable in LAN port 1
temporarily to connect your Laptop.
When connected to the VDR follow these steps to check the IP address of each LAN port:
- The VRS 002 must be connected to a LAN port which is part of the “Configuration/VDR
data” network interface (always the first one). This interface shouls always have IP
10.0.0.100.
- If none of the ports assigned to the “Configuration/VDR Data” network interface are free
then an additional port needs to be assigned to this network interface and the VRS 002
connected to it.
- Go to “Main menuNodes”
- Mark the unused LAN port that you wish to assign to the “Configuration/VDR Data”
network.
o Only unused ports can be assigned
o If a port has already been assigned to a network interface it cannot be selected
- If all LAN ports on the VDR is occupied by physical connection, do not make any change
to the configuration. Instead use a network switch to expand the “Configuration/VDR
Data” network.
- Always remember to set the Service switch back to “Normal operation” before exiting the
VDR configuration
- Go to Main menuSystemMaintenance
- Browse to the update file and select it and click “Update firmware”
