ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of short movie for
teaching speaking on the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Kalimanah in
academic year 2015/2016. This research belonged to quasi experimental research
of which the population was the second grade students of SMP N 3 Kalimanah.
The number of the research subjects were 60 students which was divided into two
classes. Class VIII D was the experimental class and VIII A the control class. The
treatment with short movie was done in VIII D. In collecting data, the researcher
used test (pre-test and post-test). The mean of pre-test score of experimental class
was 52.067 and 51.333 of control class and in the post-test the students score of
both classes increased up to 65.267 of experimental class and 60.333 of control
class. By the mean deviation of experimental class was 13.2 and 9.0 of control
class. T-test was used to analyze the data. Based on the computation, t-test result
was 5.4259 and t-table was 1.6715 at the significant level 0.05 with the degree of
freedom 58. It showed that t-test result was higher than t-table (5.4259>1.6715).
The t-test result for four components namely pronunciation, grammar, fluency,
and comprehension aspect were significant and one of the components,
vocabulary was not significant. Based on the result of the research, it can be
concluded that short movie was effective for teaching speaking and the hypothesis
which stated that short movie is effective for teaching speaking was accepted.
