4A’s LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 6

I. OBJECTIVES
A. LEARNING COMPETENCY
 To determine the distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates and
invertebrates. (S6MT-IIe-f-3) (Research-based)
 To make an inventory of vertebrates and invertebrates that are commonly
seen in the community. (Constructivism)

II. CONTENT
SUBJECT MATTER:
Vertebrates and Invertebrates
III. LEARNING RESOURCES
A. REFERENCES
 Science (MELC p.383)
B. LEARNING MATERIALS
 Laptop
 Television
C. STRATEGY
 4A’s
 Game (Pinoy Henyo)
D. INTEGRATION
 Reading
 ICT
 ARTS
E. SPRING BOARD
 Video Presentation
IV. PROCEDURE
A. PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Review
Ask the pupils:
What was the lesson we discuss yesterday?
4. Drill (Game: Pinoy Henyo)

Group the class into three (3) groups

Mechanics in doing activity: Each group will be given 2 minutes to get the correct
word. No body language is allowed. The clock stops when Player One answers correctly the
secret word. Team must have 2 players. Player one will do the questioning while player 2
should answer YES, NO OR MAYBE. The secret word will be posted at the top of the head
of guesser. The category is ANIMALS.

Group 1: Spider
Group 2: Chicken
Group 3: Shrimp

5. Motivation (ICT INTEGRATION)

The teacher will present the video about the Characteristics of
Vertebrates and Invertebrates.
(Video Downloaded from youtube.com)
https://youtu.be/Old4GnP8x8Y
Comprehension check:

1. What does the video talk about?

2. What animal are being discussed in the video?
3. How does the vertebrates are being described? How about the invertebrates?

B. DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

1. Presentation (4 A’s)

ACTIVITY (Differentiated Instruction)

Divide the class into Three (3) groups and give the activity. (8 MINUTES)

Group 1 (ART INTEGRATION)

Draw animals that can be found in the community and paste them on the
correct spot in the blank chart given by the teacher. Then explain your
work after finishing the activity.

Group 2

List down the names of animals that can be found in the community.
Decide if they belong to vertebrate or invertebrate. Explain your work after
finishing the activity.
Group 3

Make a Venn Diagram that explains the distinguishing characteristics of

vertebrates and invertebrates.

Vertebrates Invertebrates

ANALYSIS

The teacher will discuss the topic thoroughly using a powerpoint

presentation.

The Teacher will ask the pupils:

1. What is a vertebrate?
2. What is an invertebrate?
3. What do vertebrate animals have in common?
4. What is the function of the skeleton in a vertebrate animal?
5. What are some examples of invertebrates?
6. How do Vertebrates and Invertebrates differ?
7. Do Vertebrates and Invertebrates share some similarities? If yes, what
are those?

ABSTRACTION

Vertebrates are creatures made by bones of a spinal column and a backbone.

The term derives from vertebrae, the bones that make up the spines. The skeleton
keeps an animal's body up and covers it. Vertebrates share some essential
characteristics. A hollow backbone and the cranium, or skull, shield most
vertebrates' spinal cord and brain. By mating between males and females, all
vertebrates reproduce.
An invertebrate is a cold-blooded animal with no backbone. Invertebrates can
live on land—like insects, spiders, and worms—or in water. Marine invertebrates
include crustaceans (such as crabs and lobsters), mollusks (such as squids and
clams), and coral.
APPLICATION

Choose a pupil to pick a definition from the MAGIC BOX. Let

him/her read the definition aloud and paste it to what animal it
refers. Do this activity on the board.

V. EVALUATION

Multiple Choice
Direction: Read the following questions carefully and choose the letter that
best describes the distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates
and invertebrates.

1. What characteristics do all vertebrates have in common?

a. hair b. skin c. a backbone d. four legs

2. Vertebrate animals that are covered in scales and live in

an aquatic environment are:
a. reptiles b. amphibians c. mammals d. fish

3. Which characteristic makes invertebrates different from vertebrates?

a. invertebrates have a backbone c. invertebrates do not have a backbone
b. vertebrates do not have a backbone d. invertebrates have hair

4. Which is a true statement about animals?

a. Worms are invertebrates. c. Animals are made of only one cell.
b. Animals make their own food. d. Vertebrates do not have a spinal chord.

5. Amphibians are cold-blooded vertebrates which include:

a. cats and dogs c. owls and robins
b. frogs and toads d. sharks and eels

VI. ASSIGNMENT
Cut pictures of different animals and identify them according to their group, paste
it in your notebook.
ANNOTATIONS:

 Research-based

Used research-based knowledge and principles of teaching and learning in

planning/ designing the lesson about “Characteristics of Vertebrates and
Invertebrates”.

by: Titley MA, Snaddon JL, Turner EC (2017): Scientific Research on Animal
Biodiversity, towards Vertebrates and Invertebrates Characteristics.

Animal classification is a matter of sorting out similarities and differences, of

placing animals in groups and then breaking those groups apart into subgroups.
This sorting process enables scientists to describe evolutionary relationships,
identify shared traits, and highlight unique characteristics down through the
various levels of animal groups and subgroups. Among the most basic criteria by
which animals are sorted is whether or not they possess a backbone. This single
trait places an animal into one of just two groups: the vertebrates or the
invertebrates and represents a fundamental division among all animals alive today
as well as those that have long ago disappeared. If we are to know anything about
an animal, we should first aim to determine whether it is an invertebrate or a
vertebrate. We'll then be on our way to understanding its place within the animal
world.

 Constructivism

Applied the constructivism teaching philosophy to promote learner-centered approach.

Learners communicate with each other, and share their understanding, feelings,
knowledge, and experience, to come up with new knowledge.

The teacher facilitates the learning process, the learners are encouraged to interact,
exchange views and experience and construct meaning and knowledge that is based on
their needs (still with the teacher’s intervention.)
