1.0 INTRODUCTION
Microscopes are being used by scientists to study cells. Although cells can be too complex,
it can be visualised by using microscope. Generally, the first microscope was invented by
Hans and Zacharias Janssen in 1590. Bacteria was first observed by Leeuwenhoek by using a
microscope with one lens. Furthermore, Robert Hooke designed compound microscope and
he was the first person to use the term ‘cell’ to describe about things that are a part of all
living organisms, plants and animals. After years, microscope became popular among
scientists due to the improvement that has been made by Joseph Jackson Lister and William
Tulley on image blurring and colour separation.
Revolution of microscope shows its ability to magnify small objects such as microbial
cells also produce image with complex structure that are identifiable.
