Introductory Message
Welcome to English 10!
The English 10 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or
no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the
learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.
The English 10 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if
you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging
activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand
the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be
returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.
Quarter 4, Week 4
Grammar provides the rules for common use of both spoken and written language so we
can more easily understand each other. This helps us avoid committing
miscommunications and getting misinterpreted in this very competitive world.
In your previous lesson, you have learned to give expanded definitions of words. In these
lessons, you will have more knowledge and understanding about the following:
Imagine that your teacher has requested you to write a short testimony
about your experiences during the enhanced community quarantine time. You
don’t have any idea about basic rules in grammar. What do you think would be the
result of your composition?
If you want to speak and write with confidence, you need to have a firm
grasp of the rules of grammar and punctuation.
How do you know that your message or the information that you wish to
convey is grammatically correct?
3. Adjectives usually come before a noun (except when a verb separates the
adjective from the noun.)
Examples: I have a big dog.
She married a handsome Italian man.
Her husband is rich.
4. When using two or more adjectives together, the usual order is opinion
adjective, fact adjective, noun. (see additional rules for the order of fact
adjectives)
Examples: I saw a nice French table.
That was an interesting Shakespearian play.
5. Collective noun that refers to the group as a unit, a singular verb is used.
If it refers to the individuals in the group or the parts that make up the
group, then the verb should be plural.
Examples: The committee are having sandwiches for lunch.
Then they will go to London. (typically, BrE)
My family likes going to the zoo. (typically, AmE)
6. The word its and it’s are two different words with different meanings.
Examples: The dog has hurt its leg.
He says it’s two o’clock.
7. The words there, their and they’re are three different words with different
meanings.
Example: There was nobody at the party.
I saw their new car.
Do you think they’re happy?
8. Use the indefinite article a/an for countable nouns in general. Use the
definite article the for specific countable nouns and all uncountable nouns.
Examples: I saw a bird and a balloon in the sky.
The bird was blue and the balloon was yellow.
9. Use many or few with countable nouns. Use much/ lot or little for
uncountable nouns.
Example: How many dollars do you have?
How much money do you have?
There are few cars outside.
11. Use Simple past tense for actions, events, or feelings that happened at an
earlier point in time or in a definite past. Add d or ed for regular verbs,
but the irregular verbs have their own rules.
Example: My mother cooked delicious food for us.
The Health officers presented the guidelines to the community
members last month.
12. Use Future tense is one of the easiest tenses to learn because it has no
irregular forms. Just as its name suggests, it’s used to describe actions
that will happen in the future. It is formed by combining the helping verb
will with the base form of the main verb.
Example: Tomorrow I will walk home from school.
13. Use the present progressive Tense for current Action
Example: The barking dogs outside are driving me crazy.
14. Add “ed” to regular verbs for the Past Tense. Irregular verbs have their
own sets of rules.
Examples: The dogs stopped barking two seconds ago.
I drank milk tea yesterday.
15. Use Present Perfect for the unfinished past. The present perfect can be
confusing for some, but it is one of the most important rules of grammar.
When people talk about the things that have already happened but
consider the time in which they occurred to be unfinished, they use the
third form of the verb with a helping verb. The helping verb for the
present perfect is the present tense conjugation of “to have” for plural
subject and “has” for singular subject plus past participle form of the verb.
Example: I have drunk three cups of Milk tea today.
Mary’s hyperactive dog has bitten me three times so far.
16. Use Present Perfect Progressive for unfinished action and past
When the action as well as the time is considered unfinished, the verb
loads up on third from helping verbs (“to be” and “to have”) and
changes the progressive from.
Example: Mary’s dog has been barking like crazy since it was
born.
17. Use Past Perfect for the First of Two Past Actions
When two things happen in the past, we have to mark which one happened
first. The one that happened first changes to third form and gets the helping
verb, “had.”
Example: By the time I drank one cup of Milk Tea, Mary’s dog had
barked a million times.
Activity 2
A. True or False. Write True if the statement is correct and write False if it is
wrong.
1. A singular verb requires regular verb.
2. We use simple present tense to express habitual action.
3. A plural verb is used when two singular subjects are connected by or.
4. In expressing habitual actions, simple past tense is used.
5. The words committee and family are examples of collective nouns.
6. We add ed to a regular verb to change them to past tense.
7. Adjectives usually does not come before a noun.
8. It’s and its have the same meaning and use.
9. The future tense is formed by combining the helping verb will with the
base form of the main verb.
10. Drunk is the past tense of drink.
Familiarizing the basic grammar rules is one big step in better understanding of
sentence construction and conversation. The knowledge on the topic can be very
beneficial for you not only in finishing this lesson but also in future use.
Why is correct grammar important? When a message is relayed with the correct grammar,
it is easier to understand the purpose and meaning of that message. It is the structure that
conveys precise meaning from the writer to the audience.
What problem have you always encountered when you are told to write a letter, an essay
or a composition? Yes, your grammar, right?
Activity 2
Give a short definition of the following words while observing the subject and verb
agreement. Underline the subject once and the verb twice in each definition. Write
your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
Example.
Dictionary
A dictionary is a reference source containing words usually
alphabetically arranged.
It includes information about forms of words, pronunciation,
meanings, etymologies and other uses.

Activity 3
Read an excerpt from the poem “I AM” by Amy Yerkes. After reading, define each underlined
word. Remember to apply correct grammar in making your definition. Write your answers
on your paper.
I AM…
by Amy Yerkes
I am an architect. I’ve built a solid foundation; and each year I go to the school, I add
another floor of wisdom and knowledge.
I am a sculptor, I’ve shaped my morals and philosophies according to the clay of light and
wrong.
I am a painter. With each new idea I express, I paint a new hue in the world’s multitude
of colors.
I am a scientist. Each day that passes by, I gather new data, make important
observations, and experiment with new concepts and ideas.
