Outline Reading Texts in Various Discipline

An outline is a tool used to determine the structure of a text and serves as a guide for writing. It shows the framework of a text through hierarchical organization of ideas, dividing the text into the main topics and related subtopics in a logical order. There are two types of outlines - a reading outline created after reading to capture the key ideas, and a writing outline used before writing as a skeletal plan detailing the fundamental points and supporting ideas. Outlines follow principles like coordination, subordination, division and parallel construction to logically arrange the material.

TWO KINDS OF OUTLINE

1. Reading outline is used to get the main ideas of a text that is already written. It is making outline after
you read a text.

2. Writing outline is a skeletal overview of your draft, which contains your fundamental points and the
different ideas that support them.

KINDS OF OUTLINE ACCORDING TO STRUCTURE

1. Topic outline consists of/uses words and phrases. Used if the ideas being discussed can be arranged in
several ways.

2. Sentence outline uses complete sentences. Used when the topic being discussed is complicated and
requires details.

FOUR PRINCIPLES IN OUTLINING

1. Coordination requires ideas of the same relevance to be labeled in the same way.

2. Subordination shows that minor details must be placed under their respective major details.

3. Division requires that no cluster should contain only one item. In short, if you have subheading 1,
there should be subheading 2.

4. Parallel construction requires all entries in each cluster to use the same structure and format.

TWO SYSTEMS OF OUTLINING

1. Decimal outline only uses numbers as labels.

2. Alphanumeric outline uses both letters and numbers as labels (Barrot, 2016).

STEPS IN CREATING A READING OUTLINE

1. Read the entire text first. Skim the text afterward.

2. Locate the thesis statement of the whole text.

3. Look for key phrases in each paragraph of the text.

4. Locate the topic sentence of each paragraph.

5. Look at the topic sentences and group these with related ideas together.

6. Arrange the contents according to levels.

7. Evaluate the supporting details.

8. Go back to the text to check whether you have followed the sequence closely and you have not
missed any important information.

TAKE NOTE!

In making an outline:

1. The main idea or topic is the main topic of the outline. All main topics are indicated by Roman
Numeral.

2. Subtopics are noted by letters and supporting details are indicated by Arabic Numerals.
