Assignment FPE 01 and 02

This document contains two assignments related to hydro power plants and turbo machinery. The first assignment asks students to classify hydro power plants, draw a general layout showing components, and list factors for site selection. It also asks about the purpose of a surge tank and important hydro plants in Gujarat. The second assignment covers topics like the impact of a jet, forces exerted by jets on plates, and derives expressions related to jet propulsion and efficiency. It includes example problems calculating forces from water jets in various scenarios.

of water and nature of load.
2. Draw general layout mentioning essential components of hydro power plant. Explain
the function of each component.
3. List the factors affecting for site selection of hydro-electric power plant.
4. What is the purpose of a surge tank in high head hydroelectric plants?
5. List out important hydroelectric power plant installation in Gujarat. Also give
advantages and disadvantages of HEPP.

Assignment No - 02: Principle of working of Turbo – Machinery

1. Define the terms:

(a) Impact of Jet
(b) Jet Propulsion
2. Obtain an expression for the force exerted by a jet of water on a fixed vertical plate
in the direction of jet.
3. Show that the force exerted by the jet of water on an inclined plate in the direction of
jet is:

Fx  aV 2 sin 2 
4. Prove that the force exerted by a jet of water on a fixed semi-circular plate in the
direction of jet when the jet strikes at the centre of semi-circular plate is two times
the force exerted by the jet on a fixed vertical plate.
5. Show that the angle of swing of a vertical hinged plate is given by:

aV 2
sin  
W
6. Derive an expression for force exerted by the jet of water striking tangentially on an
unsymmetrical moving curved vane at one of the tip.

7. Prove that the velocity of the vanes should be half the velocity of jet for maximum
efficiency for a series of flat vanes held normal to the axis of the jet.
8. Find the force exerted by the jet of water of diameter 100 mm on a stationary flat
plate, when the jet strikes the plate normally with a velocity of 30 m/s.
[Answer: 7068.6 N]
9. A jet of water of diameter 50 mm moving with a velocity of 20 m/s strikes a fixed
plate in such a way that angle between the plate and jet is 600 .Find the force exerted
