Guitar, Performance Grade 1

Overall result: Merit

Trad. Chinese: Jasmine Flower, arr. Batchelar 24/30

The tempo was considerably quicker than suggested and the pulse wasn’t entirely stable,
but the notes were clean and the expressive contrasts were nicely observed. It could have
been more lyrical and spacious, but the playing was confident.

Trad. French: Sur le pont d’Avignon, arr. Wright 24/30

The speed was well chosen, although the pulse wasn’t always quite settled and the
continuity briefly came apart early on. The notes were largely clean, but a little more shaping
and expression would have brought it fully off the page.

Carulli: Ecossaise (No. 5 from 24 pièces, Op. 121), arr. Wright 24/30
The speed was good and the texture was mostly well realised despite a few blemishes in
notes and tone. The continuity wasn’t always safe though, with several bumpy spots and
cautious corners. The expressive contrasts were present but could have been much more
clearly defined. Even so, something of the character was conveyed.

Longworth & Walker: Spanish Knights 24/30

The basic tempo was suitable and the two voices were nicely contrasted but the pulse was
often rather bumpy, so the music didn’t move with the confident sense of line it might have
had. The dynamics were acknowledged, although could have been still more clear.
Something of the music’s character came over despite the uneven flow.

Performance as a whole 24/30

The programme presented a variety of styles and textures. Tempi were generally good, but
the pulse rarely felt under control. The musical lines came over clearly for the most part
though, and the notes were usually found despite some cautious spots. The dynamic
expression was often present, but could have been used with greater lyrical effect and
dramatic impact. Despite the reservations, the playing showed promise, and the recital as a
whole flowed well, without undue hurry.
