- the oldest form of dance and the earliest form of communication
e.g. occupations, customs, festivals,
- it handed down from generation to generation

5 MAJOR CLASSIFICATIONS OF PHILIPPINE FOLK DANCES


* Cordillera dances - dances reflects rituals which celebrate their daily lives - a good harvest, health,
peace, war, and other symbols of living.
- bontoc - pattong , kalinga - banga
- gongs and ganza
* Spanish Influenced Dances - dances reflect Christianity, and European art and culture
- jotas, fandanggos, mazurkas,waltzes
- stringed music of the rondalla
* Muslim dances - influenced by Malay, Javanese, and middle eastern traders (Islam)
- the finger express feelings and emotion

* Tribal Dances - also known as ethnic dances; ethnic minorities found in different parts of the philippine
- animal sounds, human singing, indigenous materials
* Rural dances - reflects the simple life of the people in the barrio
- performed in fiesta to honor patron saints
- indigenous materials, clapping, rondalla, percussion instruments

Dance - is a rhythmic and expressive body movements, usually coordinated into a pattern and adopted
to musical accompaniment.

KIND OF DANCE
A. Dance for participation - recreational dances

Social or ballroom dances are different from dancesport because the latter is freer in nature
and are primarily intended to widen one’s social horizon, for recreation; and fitness.
The former is performed in competition and are referred to as competitive ballroom dancing.

Pantomina A Bicolano Folk Dance


- Pantomina was originally a wedding dance from the provinces
- It is also very popular in the northern part of Samar especially in the towns of Allen and capul -
both directly facing bicolandia.
- In fact no social gathering in the bicol region is complete without the pantomina
The dance is still very popular in the bicol region even up to this time.
- In fact, the dances is synonymous with the Bicol express, Mayon volcano and the bicolandia
- The pantomina was featured in Francisca Reyes Acquino first ever folk dance book, philpiine
folk dances and games, published in february 1926
- The dance, according to aquino, was also called salampati during the spanish period
