Well Control Introduction
• Well Control IWCF is an essential qualification for Well Work
Supervisors who are working at the well site.

• WQ1 will also assess each individual for competency for Well
Control Operations while on the job at WQ1.

• Knowledge Assessment is an important part of Competency


Assurance for any Well Site responsible.

• (You have to demonstrate that you have the underpinning


knowledge prior to any practical assessment taking place)
Training Well Control Knowledge
Assessment
• Questions can be categorized into different elements:

• S – Safety Awareness
• T – Technical (subject matter knowledge)
• RR – Roles and Responsibilities of personnel at the well site or
linked to Well Site Operations
• QC – Quality Control –managing materials and processes
while on the job

- All elements above lead to providing you with the


underpinning knowledge needed to safely and competently
carry out the job.

Safety
-Two barrier philosophy
-OSH (Occupational Safety and Health) Regulations
-Managing H2S using ( Additional Barriers) (Flaring) (Specific Equipment–
both personnel and environmental at the well site)
-Securing a well overnight –suitable tubing depth/permissible activities
with observation only
-Hazard Identification - Symptoms of a kick (when preparing to kill a well)
-Hazard of fluids (in a well that has kicked)
-Suitable Safety Factors in Design– e.g. Trip Margin
-Fluid Handling –COSHH (control of substances hazardous to health)
-Safety Equipment required – specific to Kill Methods

Roles and Responsibilities
• Deviations and Acceptance (when it is possible)
• Well Control Procedure – (who checks)
• Well Supervisor responsibilities:
-Kill Sheet completion / Why? (Safety Case)
-Emergency Response (Blowout drill/exercise)
-Familiarization of workers with procedure
-Evaluate downhole conditions (BHP/T – flow/no flow)
-Blowout warning signs

• Well Superintendent responsibilities


- Barrier approval
- Deviation from procedure
* Well Programmer responsibilities
• Well Mud Agent (Company Representative) responsibilities

• Well Control- Communication tools
-Chloride fluids – temperature degradation
-Kill Fluid regulations – using Kill Sheet

avoid blow out)

MSDS (Material Specification Data Sheets)
• Observation times for removing and installing well head –
• Kill Fluid Handling
• Equipment used to determine quality of kill fluids
• Preventing corrosion
