your media consumption has affected the way you communicate.

To further understand the entire lesson of the module, let me share to

you the learning objectives of this module. At the end of this lesson you can:

2. share media habits, lifestyles and preferences; and
3. describe how media and information influenced communication.

What’s In

This Reminds Me…

Most people believe that a picture paints a thousand words. Study the
given picture below. In what way does the picture relate to communication?

6
Very Good! You learned in Grade 11 that Communication is simply
the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another.
However, communication is more than just transferring or imparting
messages, it also means that these messages must successfully be
transmitted to the receiver. Thus, the term requires three parts: sender, the
message, and the recipient.

To expound, for communication to take place, the sender ‘encodes’ the

messages, usually in a mixture of words and non-verbal communication. It is
transmitted in some way (for example, in speech or writing), and the recipient
‘decodes’ it.

In the above definition, it is noteworthy to remember that messages like

information, ideas or emotions were sent by the sender through a
communication channel to a receiver, or to multiple receivers.

What is this communication channel? How does it relate to media? Let’s

continue.

What’s New

Activity One. Mirror, Mirror of Me!

Do you see yourself like the picture below? Give your response by completing
the following sentences. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Indeed! It is not surprising to see yourself surrounded by social media

platforms like twitter, emails, Facebook and others. Why it is so?

7
What is It

Traditionally, people communicate using face to face interaction.

Nowadays, people communicate and connect with each other through
internet. Internet or the web has become the means of interaction to bring
people together – friends, family, young people, or complete strangers that
share interests or objectives – and this can foster a sense of belonging and
identity. Internet is the medium. So, what is meant by medium?

The term media, which is the

plural of medium, refers to the
communication channels through
which we disseminate news, music,
movies, education, promotional
messages and other data. It includes
physical and online newspapers and
magazines, television, radio, billboards,
telephone, the Internet, and fax.

It describes the various ways

through which we communicate in
society. Because it refers to all means

of communication, everything ranging
U-Media-Futures-Forum-pic_0.jpg from a telephone call to the evening
news on television can be called media.
So, people nowadays live and breathe with these various media around
them. As a result, terms like media habits, lifestyle and preferences become a
widely used terminologies in study of media and communication. To define,
read the table below.

Terms Definition
media habits -- automaticity of media consumption or observable acts
that develops as people repeat media usage behavior in
stable circumstances over a period of time.
-- usual activities related to the consumption of media like
the television, radio, and newspapers.
media -- way of using technology and social websites to empower
lifestyles learning, communication, collaboration, and community.
-- how the behaviors are incorporated into one’s life (daily
habits)
media -- the option to select media over others.
preferences -- the individual taste and style as related to media usage

8
What’s More
Internet has drastically changed the way people interact. Do the activity
below to know your habits, lifestyle and preferences.
