Lab Report Fluid Properties

This document contains data from experiments measuring the density, specific gravity, and viscosity of water and oil. The density of water was measured to be 928.3 kg/m3 on average using a beaker method, and the density of oil was measured to be 2170.3 kg/m3. The specific gravity of water was 0.996 on average. The viscosity of water was measured to be 0.0009 m2/s on average, while the viscosity of oil was 0.001 m2/s on average. A discussion analyzes factors affecting the results and compares the measured properties of water and oil.

DISCUSSION

Generally, fluid properties spilt into three categories which is kinematic properties,
thermodynamic properties and miscellaneous properties but we just conduct and experiment
that involve thermodynamic and miscellaneous properties which is density, specific gravity
and viscosity. The theoretical and experimental result of water density are not much
difference. Result from the experiment is closed but not exact with the theoretical. There are
many factors that can affects the results. First and foremost, the temperature will affect the
mass and others. It is because, the environment which is the temperature may drop or rise
during the experiment. Besides that, the measurement of mass using a scale that may be
inaccurate. This is because, it will be less accurate than the actual scale. In this experiment,
water is the liquid reference, which has a density of 1 g/Ml. It is because, the density is
proportional to mass, the specific gravity of an object may be calculated using the mass of the
object divided by the mass of the water. Based on our laboratory activities, we may conclude
that there are numerous theoretical methods for determining fluid properties. The
characteristics of water and oil are determined in this experiment. We did five types of
experiments: measuring beaker method, Eureka can method, density bottle method,
hydrometer method, and viscosity experiment. It is because the fluid is likely to be at the
same temperature given the period of time it has been surrounded by air at the same
temperature, the temperature of the ambient air should be recorded from the results.  The
density of the fluid is closely connected to its temperature, the temperature of the fluid is an
important measurement. The fluid would be less dense if the temperature was higher. If the
experiment is carried out in multiple locations, the findings will not be the same. As a result,
the viscosity, density, and specific gravity of water and oil can be determined. Water is
denser than oil in terms of density. It is demonstrated by the fact that when oil is poured into
water, the oil floats on top of the water. However, the specific gravity can be calculated by
dividing the density of fluid to the density of water at 4°C (water = 1000kg/m3) under
atmospheric pressure. Lastly, the time taken to do the viscosity experiment is less precise.
The reason for this is that when the marbles are released, they fall very quickly, making the
time measured less precise. So that we can take more accurate time, we should give a higher
measuring cylinder so that we can prepare to measure the time it takes for the marbles to
travel over the line.
CONCLUSION

Based on the experiment that we have done, the objective of this experiment was
achieved which is to determine the fluid properties of the water and oil. Besides that, the
density bottle, eureka can, and hydrometer were used in this experiment. The density bottle
was the most precise tool for determining the density of water. The measuring beaker was
used to determine the liquid's viscosity after the density bottle accuracy. As the conclusion
the density bottle is the most accurate apparatus to measure the density of the fluid which is
water and oil. So that, using the different type of the apparatus will give the different reading
or value of the density.
