Notes: - atm. is so called physical atmosphere

the technical atmosphere, at, is identical to kp/cm²

- The so-called kilogram forces/cm² is considered equal to Kp/cm²

- wft = Wet film thickness, dft = Dry film thickness, VS% = Volume Solids

CALCULATION OF

Theoretical Spreading Rate (on completely smooth surface)

In m² per liter = VS % × 10 In sq.ft. per US gallon = VS % × 16.04

desired DFT (micron) desired DFT (mil)

Theoretical Paint Consumption (on completely smooth surface)

In liter = area (m) × desired DFT (micron)

VS % × 10

In US gallon = area (sq.ft.) × desired DFT (mil)

VS % × 16.04

Practical consumption = area × consumption factor

theoretical spreading rate

Theoretical spreading rate = VS % × 10

FORMULAS FOR ESTIMATING
SURFACE AREAS OF SHIPS

Bottom (incl. Boottop): A = ((2 × d) + B) × Lpp × P

where d = draught maximum (as per Lloyd’s)

B = breath extreme (as per Lloyd’s)
Lpp = length between perpendiculars (as per Lloyd’s)

P = 0.90 for big tankers, 0.85 for bulk carriers,

0.70- 0.75 for dry cargo liners

or

A = Lpp × (Bm + 2 × D) × V
Bm × Lpp × D

where D = mean draft at paint line (m)

Bm = breath moulded (m)
Lpp = length between perpendiculars
V = displacement (cubic meter)
corresponding to the draft

Boottop: A = 2 × h × (Lpp + 0.5 × B)

where h = width of boottop (to be informed by owner)

Lpp = length between perpendiculars (as per Lloyd’s)
B = breath extreme (as per Lloyd’s)

Topsides: A = 2 × H × (Loa + 0.5 × B)

where H = height of topsides (depth - draught) (as per Lloyd’s)

Loa = length overall (as per Lloyd’s)
B = breath extreme (as per Lloyd’s)
