Building upon Franklin's work, many other scientists studied electricity and began to
understand more about how it works. For example, in 1879, Thomas Edison invented
the electric light bulb and our world has been brighter ever since! But was Benjamin
Franklin really the first person to discover electricity.
Throughout the next hundred years, many inventors and scientists tried to find a way
to use electrical power to make light. In 1879, the American inventor Thomas Edison
was finally able to produce a reliable, long-lasting electric light bulb in his laboratory.
Electricity is a kind of energy that can only be valued by the effects it gives. It is a
fundamental part of nature and it is one of the commonly used forms of energy. This
word comes from the Greek word elektron which means amber.
Stating Research Questions
Benjamin Franklin conducted early experiments with lightning and electricity. In 1800,
Italian physicist Alessandro Voltra invented the first electric battery and discovered the
role of positive and negative connectors and voltage. Michael Faraday, an English
scientist, invented the electric dynamo, the first power generator in 1831. Thomas
Edison followed in 1879 with the first light bulb.
Electricity provides the power on the earth and in space. Electricity runs heaters and air
conditioners, lighting systems, water pumps and electronic devices. Electric generators
churn out millions of watts to operate hospital equipment, run printing presses and light
billions of miles of highways.
Electric generators convert mechanical power into electrical power with a stationary
conductor and wire conduit. An electric current is generated as wires cross a magnetic
field. Generators contain a turning shaft with an attached magnet. A stationary
conducting ring, wrapped in a continuous wire, contains the shaft. The rotating magnet
produces the electric current.
Power is measured in watts, which are units of energy. A kilowatt is 1,000 watts.
Consumer and commercial electricity is measured in kilowatt-hours, which is the same
as 1,000 watts working for one hour.
Your brain dispatches millions of electrical signals along the nerves in your central
nervous system. These nerves connect with your muscles and provide the power to
complete an action or movement. These electrical signals enable you to brush your
teeth, eat a meal and run off extra calories.
Indicating Scope and Limitations
The discipline of Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) branch is grounded in the
sciences and in mathematics as these subjects help to obtain both a qualitative and
quantitative description of how Electrical and Electronics systems will work. If you enjoy
these subjects, then you will find EEE a fascinating and rewarding field of study with
man opportunities to solve key engineering problems.
If you enjoy learning how things work, or if you were the kid always taking your parents
appliances apart and trying to put them back together again, then this is the field for
you.
