4. Instructions
1) Redispersion step
• This procedure can be used for dispersions up to 3% concentration although it is written for
1% concentration.
• Stir the suspension until no solid material is visible. This step can typically take between 30
minutes and an hour depending on the form of the dry CNC.
• When Step 1 is complete, centre the sonication probe in the liquid volume.
• Apply the sonication treatment (80% amplitude) until an energy value of 5000 Joules per g.
of solid CNC is reached (typically between 1 and 2 minutes depending on probe surface condition).
• Dilute the CNC suspension to 0.1 wt. % using deionized water to achieve a final suspension
weight of 20 g.
• Place the volume designated by the equipment manufacturer of the prepared suspension
into the cuvette for analysis. You may use the 0.7 μm filter to remove dust or other solid
contaminants that may interfere with the analysis.
• Run the particle size measurement, using the refractive index/viscosity values of water for
the dispersant phase and using a refractive index of 1.53 for the cellulose particles.
