QUESTION 1
(PO1, CO1, C2, C2, C2, C4, C4)
a) Classify whether the following processes are batch, continuous, or semibatch, and
transient or steady state:
ii) A medication fluid inside a syringe and needle is being injected into a patient’s arm
(2 marks)
b) An equimolar liquid mixture of benzene and toluene enters a distillation unit at a rate
of 800 mol/h. The top product leaving the column contains 80 mol% benzene (benzene-
rich phase). The molar flow rate of the bottom stream leaving the column is thrice the
flow rate of the benzene-rich phase. Then, this bottom stream enters a second
distillation column in which the top product leaving the column contains 80 mol%
toluene (toluene-rich phase). The waste stream leaving the bottom of the second
column is of unknown composition with twice the flow rate of the toluene-rich stream.
ii) Determine the molar flow rates for the benzene-rich stream and the bottom stream
leaving the first distillation column
(4 marks)
iii) Determine the molar flow rates of the toluene-rich stream and the waste stream
composition leaving the second column.
(4 marks)
QUESTION 2
(PO1, CO1, C2, C2, C3, C4, C3, C4)
A mixture of fuel containing propane and butane is burned in pure oxygen. The combustion
product consists of 47.4 mole% water, carbon dioxide and oxygen gas, where the mole
fraction of oxygen gas is 45% of that of carbon dioxide. Assume 225 mol of combustion
product as the basis of calculation.
QUESTION 3
(PO1, CO1, C3, C4, C2, C2, C5)
W Q
iii) Evaluate the rate at which heat (kJ) must be transferred to or from the reactor by
using the heat of formation method (ΔĤf)
(13 marks)
