A. Scientific Method

The document outlines the steps of the scientific method which are: 1) Ask a question/make an observation, 2) Do background research, 3) Construct a hypothesis, 4) Test the hypothesis through an experiment, 5) Analyze the data and draw a conclusion, 6) Communicate the results. It provides examples of applying the scientific method to test whether a plant grows faster with sunlight and whether boys are taller than girls on average.

Scientific method

1. Try to identify as many words related with “Scientific Method” as possible. How many
steps have you identified?

observation → smell touch see

research → use reliable sources to learn background information
hypothesis → prediction of what you believe
experiment → test hypothesis
conclusion → comments of the results obtained
share conclusions → share your results

2. Put the following steps of the “Scientific Method” in order and then match
them with their definition.
1. Analyze your data and draw a conclusion 4. Test your hypothesis by doing an
experiment

2. Construct an hypothesis 5. Ask a question / Observation

3. Communicate your results 6. Do background research

6 Rather than starting from scratch in putting together a plan for answering your
question, you want to be a savvy scientist using library and Internet research
to help you find the best way to do things and ensure that you don't repeat
mistakes from the past.

555 5 The scientific method starts when you ask a question about something that
you observe: How, What, When, Who, Which, Why, or Where?

4 Your experiment tests whether your hypothesis is true or false. It is important

for your experiment to be a fair test. You conduct a fair test by making sure
that you change only one factor at a time while keeping all other conditions the
same. You should also repeat your experiments several times to make sure
that the first results weren't just an accident.

2 An hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work: "If _____[I do this]
_____, then _____[this]_____ will happen."
You must state your hypothesis in a way that you can easily measure, and of
course, your hypothesis should be constructed in a way to help you answer
your original question.

3 To complete your science project you will communicate your results to others
in a final report and/or a display board. Professional scientists do almost
exactly the same thing by publishing their final report in a scientific journal or
by presenting their results on a poster at a scientific meeting.
1 Once your experiment is complete, you collect your measurements and
analyze them to see if your hypothesis is true or false. Scientists often find that
their hypothesis was false, and in such cases they will construct a new
hypothesis starting the entire process of the scientific method over again.
Even if they find that their hypothesis was true, they may want to test it again
in a new way.

3. Draw an outline that shows the scientific method in your notebook, using the
following concepts:

● 5 Analyze your data and draw a conclusion

● 4 Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment
● 3 Construct an hypothesis
1 Ask a question / Observation
● 6 Communicate your results
● 2 Do background research

4. Using the example seen in the video, explain step by step how you would carry
out the following two experiments using the scientific method.

a. A plant grows faster with sunlight.

b. Boys are taller than girls.

Question: Are boys taller than girls?

l
Background research: A project of professional scientifics said that the average height of
Spanish men is 1.74 meters (5 feet, 8 inches) and for women is 1.63 meters (5 feet, 4
inches), for those between 20 and 49 years old.
l
Hypothesis: If I compare men and women between 20 and 49 years old, then more boys
will be taller.
l
Test hypothesis - Experiment: I take 20 men and 20 women between 20 and 49 years old,
I size their height and I compare it.
l
Conclusion: The boys between 20 and 49 years, are taller in Spain.
