Computer Facilities to New Students at IIT Bombay
Warm Welcome to IIT Bombay (IITB) Users Community !
Computers play a vital role in a student's day-to-day life at IITB. Admissions, course
registration, and often the course content delivery etc are all computerized. It is therefore necessary to
know where and how to access these systems. There are two different classes of services available to the
user community at IITB. The first is provided at your native department where you have been admitted.
Respective departments will inform you about those services during the orientation programs they
conduct. The second category of services are the ones made available centrally under the auspices of
Computer Centre. This document is aimed at introducing you to the later class of services in general.
Computer Centre at IITB provides students with various Centralized Computer Facilities which
include Email, Web Browsing, File Storage, Computational Software's, and High Performance
Computing (HPC). These services can be accessed using your LDAP-ID and password. IITB campus
has a gigabit backbone fiber optic network that connects all computer facilities. This network in turn
connects to the Internet using WAN circuits, currently having a total bandwidth capacity of 15 Gbps.
Each of the hostel rooms wired so that students can connect their own computers. A centralized user hall
viz., Bits & Bytes Lab is also available at the Computer Center. In addition, there are authenticated
wireless facilities where users can connect their devices.
While opening up its IT infrastructure to the users, IITB expects that the users will use these
facilities responsibly. In particular, it is expected that users take adequate precautions so that their
computers do not get infected with virus. In order to promote disciplined usage of IT infrastructure, the
IITB IT Infrastructure Access Policy is in operation at IIT Bombay. Before attempting to access the
IT infrastructure of IITB, each user is required to carefully go through the Policy and accept the same.
The following information will be useful for you in determining your LDAP-ID and password and
signing up the IT Access Policy of IIT Bombay:
. Your initial LDAP login is same as your roll number.
. Your initial password will be your date of birth. For example, if your date of birth is 05/08/1984
(DD/MM/YYYY), then your initial password will be '05081984' (without quotes). If you fail with
date of birth as password, please try with your roll number as your password. If it still fails then,
kindly care to contact your department system administrator.
. The password obtained in the above manner is the initial one time password. It must be changed as
soon as possible before you attempt to accept the IT Access Policy or before accessing any other IT
Services. For changing password, please visit the following Central Account Management Portal
(CAMP) url, https://www.cc.iitb.ac.in/camp/
. Log into the CAMP system using your LDAP id and initial one-time password. After you login
successfully, please reset your password to something of your choice by clicking on ‘Change
Passwd’. It is highly recommended that users change their password at least once a year.
Please remember that,
"Do not give your LDAP USERID & PASSWORD".
"Do not keep your username or date of birth as password".
"Do not keep weak passwords which can be easily guessed".
"Frequently change your password".
"COMPUTER CENTRE of IITB OR YOUR DEPARTMENT WILL NEVER ASK FOR
YOUR PASSWORD".
"Do not reply to mails that ask for your passwords".
"Do not respond to phishing emails, by visiting the link provided in the email and entering
your password".
. To sign the on-line IITB IT Access Policy (General) please visit the URL
https://www.cc.iitb.ac.in/page/itaccesspolicy. Please go through the document carefully and choose
the appropriate option that appear at the bottom of the page. Please remember that rejection of IT
Access Policy will render the above mentioned services permanently unavailable. In order to sign
up the policy, you will need to provide your LDAP-ID and the new Password you have obtained in
the previous step. At this stage you have successfully signed the IT Access Policy of IITB.
. The roll-number based LDAP-ID can be changed to something of your choice by clicking on
‘Change Uid’ option, available after login into CAMP interface. Please note that you can change
your LDAP-ID only once. As it will be an official email address, please do not choose a frivolous
LDAP-ID. We will let you change the LDAP-ID at the end of the semester.
. Due to various reasons, it is possible that your department/rollnumber/category may change
during your stay at IITB. Please inform Computer Centre about such changes as soon as
possible.
There is one more step to get started with the facilities provided via LDAP, and that is setting up
SSO (2 factor authentication). You should have reset your default LDAP password and have accepted
the IT policy using steps mentioned above, before setting up the SSO.
Following are the steps to register your smartphone for 2-factor authentication. Please note this is a one-

1. Open Play Store or App Store on your smartphone and install Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator
or Duo Mobile app (Google Authenticator is recommended).
2. Open a web browser (Firefox/Chrome/Safari/Edge) and visit https://sso.iitb.ac.in on your Desktop/Laptop.
3. Login with your LDAP credentials and CAPTCHA.
4. Go to Manage Account.
5. Click on the Configure button under the "Two Factor Authentication" title.
6. Click on the Register button under the "Time-based OTP" title.
7. Enter your LDAP password again.
8. Now, take your smartphone and open Authenticator app installed in 1st step.

10. The app Duo Mobile / Google Authenticator / Microsoft Authenticator is now ready to link with SSO and start
displaying a 6 digit code on your smartphone.
11. Enter this 6 digit OTP from Duo Mobile / Google Authenticator / Microsoft Authenticator app in the text box
located below QR-code.
12. Click on the Register button to complete the process.
13. DO NOT uninstall the authenticator app
(Also watch this video which demonstrates above steps)
Hurray!! By now your LDAP is ready. To verify your LDAP is working properly, try using one
of the services which it provides, let’s say webmail (all institute-wide mails will come here).
1. Visit the URL, https://webmail-sso.iitb.ac.in/
2. Enter your LDAP, password and the OTP from the authenticator app to sign-in.
3. If you successfully sign-in and are able to see the common mail application interface, then your LDAP is
working properly. If you can’t sign-in contact your SC regarding it.
Each Hostel is having system administrator. Please contact them for any help regarding LDAP
Access. Throughout your stay in IITB, Hostel and Department System Administrators will be of great
help and you should approach them without any hesitation. You may also choose to attend HELPDESK
sessions (more information available at the URLs given below) conducted at the Computer Centre.
Hope you enjoy your stay in IITB.
