Grade level: High School (9-12th)

Unit of study: Upcycling

Materials: Reusable and Recyclable Material

Time frame: 2-3 Weeks

National Core Art Standards:


VA:Cn10.1.Ia: Document the process of developing ideas from early stages to fully elaborated
ideas.
VA:Cr1.1.Ia: Use multiple approaches to begin creative endeavors.

Lesson Objectives (what will the students do):


- Students must create a mythical creature using predominantly reusable/recyclable
materials.
- Students' mythical creatures must stand at least one foot tall.
- Students must create a mythical creature that has a certain strength or power for
protection.

Learning Targets (what do you want the students to leave with):


- Students will create a mythical creature at least one foot in height that demonstrates the
ability to use recycled and repurposed materials.

Procedures (what will you do , what will they do):


I Do: Present importance of reducing waste and/or repurposing, in this instance for art.
Present artist inspiration.
Present student objectives.
Present teacher example.
You Do: Create thumbnail sketches - Decide upon mythical creature and their power(s)
Create armature of creature (if needed)
Refine details to meet project requirements - at least one foot in height.
Artist statement and critique.
