The Conditional and Related Statements

This document discusses conditional statements and related logical concepts. It provides examples of conditional statements in the form "If P then Q" and how to write equivalent statements in this form. It also defines the converse, inverse, and contrapositive of a conditional statement and provides examples of writing these related statements. Finally, it discusses determining whether related statements are logically equivalent.

LOGIC
MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD
THE CONDITIONAL RELATED STATEMENTS

1.Conditional statements are those statements where

a hypothesis is followed by a conclusion. It is also
known as an " If-then" statement. If the hypothesis
is true and the conclusion is false, then the
conditional statement is false. Likewise, if the
hypothesis is false the whole statement is false.
EXAMPLE:

• If I live In Boston, then I must live in Massachusetts.

:-based on the sentence, he gave himself a conditional that must be on his expectations.
EXAMPLE #1 WRITE A STATEMENT IN AN
EQUIVALENT IF P, THEN Q FORM.

• A. The number is an even number provided that it is divisible by 2. b. Today is Friday, only if yesterday
was Thursday.
SOLUTION

a. The statement, “The number is an even number provided that it is divisible by 2,” is in “gq provided that
p” form. The antecedent 1s “it is divisible by 2,” and the consequent is “the number is an even number.”
Thus its “If p. then q” form is If it is divisible by 2, then the number is an even number. B. The statement,
“Today is Friday, only if yesterday was Thursday,” is in “p only if g” form, The antecedent is “today is Fnday.”
The consequent is “yesterday was Thursday.” Its “If p, then q” form is If today is Friday, then yesterday was
Thursday.
THE CONVERSE THE INVERSE AND THE
CONTRAPOSITIVE MEANS

• We start with the conditional statement “If P then Q.” The converse of the conditional statement is “If Q
then P.” The contrapositive of the conditional statement is “If not Q then not P.” The inverse of the
conditional statement is “If not P then not Q.”

GRACE HOPPER

• Grace Brewster Hopper (née Murray; December 9, 1906 – January 1, 1992) was an American computer
scientist, mathematician, and United States Navy rear admiral. One of the first programmers of the
Harvard Mark I computer, she was a pioneer of computer programming who invented one of the first
linkers.
• On September 9, 1947, the world’s first computer bug was recorded. But this was no ordinary ‘software bug’. It was a real-life
moth that was causing the issues with the computer’s hardware. This “first actual case of bug being found” was recorded
by computer scientist Grace Hopper.
