Conditional Statement

This document contains a mathematics learning activity for grade 8 students on conditional statements. It provides background information on conditional statements, including their if-then form and truth table. It then gives examples of conditionals. The learning competency is determining the relationship between the hypothesis and conclusion of if-then statements. There are 4 exercises for students to practice writing conditionals in if-then form, identifying the hypothesis and conclusion, and completing conditional statements. The reflection asks students to explain how they can apply conditional statements in their life. Key is provided to check answers.

Background Information for Learners

A conditional statement is a statement in Mathematics that consists of a hypothesis

and conclusion. These statements are usually written in if – then form. The hypothesis of a
conditional states the given facts that are assumed as true. This is found in the “if” part of the
conditional. The conclusion of a conditional states what needs to be proven or establish as
true. This is found in the “then” part of the conditional.
A conditional statement is symbolized by p →q (read as p implies q). The logical
connector in a conditional statement is denoted by the symbol →.
P Q p →q

The truth table above shows that a conditional statement is false when the hypothesis
is true and the conclusion is false.
Study the following examples.

Exercise 3. Underline Me!

Direction : Write the conditionals in if – then form. Underline each hypothesis once and each
conclusion twice.

4. An angle that measures 20° is an acute angle.
5. A whole number is an integer.
Exercise 4. Complete Me!

Direction: Write the conditionals at the if – then form, then fill the missing statements on the
other boxes.
