“Learning is a livelihood”.
The COVID-19 pandemic compelled every individual to find ways to support their
subsistence. Many business establishments were closed that led to massive employees lay-off.
Because of this, one must be creative and innovative to live.
The Sarrat National High School through the initiative of the Science and TLE
Departments, with the supervision of Dr. Marietta B. Yap conceived a program that could be
of great help not only for the staff but also to its stakeholders especially those who are
inclined to farming.
Let Do the Worms Do the Work Program or vermicomposting is the processing of
organic wastes through earthworms. It is a natural, odorless, aerobic process, much different
from traditional composting. Earthworms ingest waste then excrete casts – dark, odorless,
nutrient- and organically rich, soil mud granules that make an excellent soil conditioner.
Earthworm casts are a ready-to-use fertilizer that can be used at a higher rate of application
than compost, since nutrients are released at rates that growing plants prefer.
The said program aims to promote organic farming and the utilization of organic
compost. It encourages for instance the conversion of municipal solid waste into
vermicompost. The organic manure can thereafter supplement the use of chemical fertilizers
in crop production. Vermi-compost improves the physical condition of the soil and increases
the level of micronutrients. The plan furthers stresses the growing demand for organically
produced food.
In connection to this, the Department of Education memorandum no. 095, s. 2018
which is about sustaining the implementation of the Gulayan sa Paaralan Program in public
elementary and secondary schools nationwide would perfectly align to this project wherein
existing gardens will be applied with abundant organic fertilizer to maintain its growth and to
produce healthier products. Meanwhile, the school-based feeding program will also be
benefited from this project where products came from the garden will be used as additional
foods to be served to students.
Through this program, participants will be given extra knowledge that is once in a
lifetime experience. Also, this program will develop their entrepreneurial capabilities. Hence,
they will be generating an income while in school or even at home. Participants will not only
be trained per se on the production aspect of the project but they will be equipped with proper
values to become a competent entrepreneur.
V. OBJECTIVES
General: The main objective of vermicomposting project is to produce organic
manure of exceptional quality for the organically starved soil. Agricultural wastes, wastes
from dairy and animal farms are usually dumped into at places resulting in a foul mess. By
vermicomposting these wastes, they are not only utilized efficiently but also help in making a
value-added product.
This project will be accomplished through the help of parents, TLE and Science teachers,
faculty and staff of Sarrat National High School.
Harvesting
Part 1
1. Make sure that you have some new bedding, moist and ready for your worm farm.
2. Remove the top three to four inches of material from your worm farm and put it aside, as this
will contain lots of worms and mostly unprocessed organic material.
3. Empty your worm farm onto a large piece of clean plastic, and start to reset your worm farm –
Put in a couple of sheets of newspaper to prevent the fine material falling out the drain holes.
4. Put the moist bedding in and then the organic material and worms that you saved from the
previous worm farm set up. [The three or four inches of material off the top of you worm farm
you saved.
Part 2
Method one: Sifting with a coarse screen-
Method Two: Dump and sort with light-
Method Three: Migration –
EXPECTED OUTPUT
Pure vermi cast at Php15.00 per kilo.
