The language ab initio course is a language acquisition course for students with
little or no experience of the language. There are 12 languages offered at this
level.
Language B Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) are language acquisition
courses for students with some previous experience of learning the language.
There are 23 languages offered at this level.
The language A: language and literature course introduces the critical study
and interpretation of written and spoken texts from a wide range of literary
and non literary genres. The formal analysis of texts is supplemented by
awareness that meaning is not fixed but can change in respect to contexts of
production and consumption. This course is available for study in 17
languages.
