Physics Write-Up

The document discusses the design and testing of a model rocket. It describes the rocket's linear motion, acceleration during takeoff and landing, velocity during descent, and how Newton's laws of motion apply. Calculations are shown for acceleration, velocity, force of takeoff, landing, and gravity. A reflection discusses collaborating well but struggling during testing when the rocket repeatedly failed until the final launch. The author realized having a more positive attitude would have helped.

Linear Motion
Linear motion is the motion an object is moving in a strait line. An object that is
moving in a linear motion moves at a constant velocity the whole time until it
reaches its goal. Linear motion is simply a transitional motion that is getting you
from point A to point B in the shortest way possible while moving at the same
speed the whole time.
Newton’s First Law- Law of Inertia
Newton’s first law of motion states that an object at rest wants/tends to stay at
rest, and an object in motion wants/tends to stay in motion until acted upon by a
non-zero net force. Say you have a ball and roll it on a table. The ball will continue
to roll at the same speed until something causes it to stop or go faster. This would
include you blowing on or pushing the ball the ball causing it to accelerate; or the
ball falling off the table, causing it to free fall of the table until it hits the ground. As
it falls, the ball will again accelerate downwards until it hits the ground causing it to
stop falling. It’s inersia wants to stay constant but all the things acting upon it
causes it to either accelerate or decelerate.
Newton’s Second Law- Law of Force and Mass
Newton’s second law of motion states that the acceleration of an object is
dependent on the net force acting upon an object and the mass of the object.
When riding a bike, your legs pushing on the pedals of your bike is a force that
makes your bike move and accelerate. The bike is the mass that you are trying to
move. As you continue to pedal, the bike will accelerate due to force you are using
to push down the pedals.
Newton’s Third Law- Law of Action and Reaction
Newton’s third law of motion explains that every action has an equal and opposite
reaction. As an example of this, you can tie a string to a wooden board and try and
pull is across the table. When doing this, you are pulling the board with enough
force to make it move across the table. With the amount of force you pull it with,
the board will put off the exact same amount of force causing it to stay stationary.
It will stay this way until you pull it with enough force so that it breaks through and
starts moving.
Kinematics
Acceleration during take off- 532m/s2
To find the acceleration of my rocket during take off, I had to divide
the initial velocity by the time under thrust. The rocket's initial velocity
was 58.52m/s2. The time under thrust was 0.11 seconds.
Velocity of decent- 5.97m/s2
In order to calculate my rocket's velocity during its descent, I
divided the max height by the duration of it’s decent. It’s max height was
64.01 meters. The duration of the descent was 10.71 seconds
Acceleration during landing- 107.1m/s2
When finding its acceleration during the landing, I divided the
duration of the descent by the duration of the landing. The duration of
the descent was 10.71 seconds and the duration of the landing was 0.1
second
Dynamics
Force of take off- 105.868N

To calculate the force during take off I had to multiply the mass of the
rocket by the acceleration of the take off. Like in the previous slide, the
acceleration of the take off is 532m/s2, and the mass of the rocket was 0.199kg.

Force of Landing- 21.31N

The force of landing is determined by multiplying acceleration of the landing

and the mass of the rocket. The acceleration of the landing is 107.1m/s2 and the
mass of the rocket was again 0.199kg.

Force of Gravity- 1.952N

The force of gravity affecting the rocket was calculated using the equation
F=ma, which is the mass of the rocket multiplied by the acceleration of the
rocket. The mass was 0.199kg and the acceleration is 9.81m/s2.
Dynamics- Explained with Newton’s Laws of Motion
Force of take off- Described using the law of Force and Mass (2) and law of Inertia (1)

2) When the rocket is launched, the pressure chamber is already filled with water and a lot of air pressure. This means
that what the string is pulled, all that air and water is released pushing the rocket up into the air. The air pushes the water, the
water pushes the air. When all of this pressure is released out of the chamber, it creates a great amount of force that is able to
propel the rocket upwards. The rocket is the mass, and the water and air push it up is the force.

1) The rocket is stationary on the launcher and wants to stay that way. The rocket tries to fight against the force of the
water and air pushing it up but is unsuccessful. The rocket was stationary, it wanted to stay stationary. But the water and air in
the pressure chamber won't let the rocket be stationary once the string is pulled.

Force of landing- Described using the law of Action and Reaction (3)

When our rocket started to descend downwards towards the ground, our backslider design made the landing soft and safe for
our rocket. We can describe our landing using the law of action and reaction because when the rocket hits the ground, the
ground hits it back, making the rocket slow down and maybe even come a little off the ground after landing. This happens
because when the rocket lands it is still moving at a pretty fast speed even after you parachute deploys or your backslider
works. And even though ours was greatly affected by the air resistance and came down slowly, it hit the ground with a good
amount of force to make it jump up a little.

Reflection
During this project I worked with Fern/Alyce and we worked very well together, especially during the building part.
We were very good at communicating our thoughts during the building and planning stages of the engineering
process. There weren’t really any conflicts or issues while we worked, we were very good at getting what needed
to get done done. We both knew what needed to be done and when when it needed to get done by. I feel like
while working I was both a leader and follower. This is because I did a ton of refinements and told Fern what they
needed to do for our rocket, but I also stepped back a lot and just let what happened happen. I feel like I was
pretty supportive towards my partner and their ideas and when they maybe didn’t have a very good idea, I would
build onto it making it better. My partner and I were the most successful I think during the plan and create stages
of the engineering and design process because we had really good ideas and we executed them very well. I
struggled with the refinement/improvement stage because our rocket kept failing and dive bombing at the ground.
Luckily it never broke, but at one point I was about to give up on trying to fix it though because it felt impossible.
Also when ever we made a good refinement it broke off so we couldn't even test it until the launch exhibition. If I
had to reflect on one part of this project that I did poorly on and how I would change it, it would be the attitude
towards the project. Everything I did during the project was done well, it just all started with an attitude that was
either stressed out of angry with what was going on. During the testing stage, I was always thinking or knowing
that the rocket would fail. Most of the time, I had zero hope that my rocket would do well. And after it failed I would
feel even angrier. Next time I would want try and make my attitude better towards what i was doing, whether it
failed or if it didn’t.
